Last week we spent a week in the West Country. It was our holiday, and we tried to pack as much activity into the week as we could. Read on to find out more

Carol's Blog from the West Country.

Last week we traveled from Kent to Ashburton in Devon for our summer holiday. We were amazed at just how busy the roads were, as the schools were yet to break up. Our journey took an hour longer than anticipated, but when we arrived at our hotel, we were pleasantly surprised, as sometime when booking online, the hotel turns out to be not as nice as the photos make it look.

Furzeleigh Mill Country House dates back to the 16th century, and was once the local mill. It is set in pleasant gardens, with seats outside overlooking beautiful countryside. Inside it oozes character with oak beams. The restaurant has table cloths, none of the modern bare tables with place mats, I am old fashioned, and I just love a table cloth, and a carpet on the floor, rugs were laid over a wooden floor, and the view from the window out into the garden was lovely.

I could not fault the food in any way, the Dartmoor Breakfast was a great way to start the day, although you could vary it by ordering other choices, which I did, as I like smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast when on holiday. The evening meal was great, the soup was always hot enough, and the steak cooked just as I like it. The bedroom was cosy with a nice view from the window, so I would recommend this hotel to anyone else.

Our Activities

We are used to the best weather in Kent, and although warm, it was almost a relief to be a few degrees cooler, as it gave us an opportunity to play tennis. We also did a lot of walking, something which I have neglected lately since my dog died in April, previously to then I was out every morning with Leo.

Our tennis actually improved during the week, we never score, but found ourselves having some really good rallies at times. Now we are home, we have vowed to find the time to carry on, as there is a tennis court near the sea front, then afterwards there is an ice cream booth that sells ninety nines. Maybe that undoes all the hard work of trying to keep fit, but it is a nice experience.

I swam in the sea once, it was a little cove named Fairy Cove, and I was encouraged when I saw quite a few other people in, but the water was so much colder than it is in Kent. Nevertheless I did enjoy it. Then later in the week we went to the open air swimming pool which is always warm no matter the weather, it was full of school children enjoying themselves, we had fun too.

Our steamboat trip

We also went on a steamboat trip from Dartmouth to Totnes. It was a nice day with just a gentle breeze, so we sat at the front of the boat enjoying the view. Our tour guide pointed out many places of interest including Greenway House, the home of Agatha Christie. We could only just see it on top of the hill, beautifully framed by trees, its brightness glinting in the sun, and that was enough to whet our appetites, so we decided to make a proper visit to it.

A few days later found us there, you had to telephone first and book your car parking space, if we didn't we were told we would be turned away. This is because they have limited car parking facilities. Its a little walk up to the house, but when you get there, it's well worth it.

It now belongs to the National Trust, but has been kept very much as it was when Agatha Christie lived there. Her presence can be felt inside these walls, the room where she wrote her stories, her bedroom, and the kitchen, as well as the ornate library and drawing rooms, with such splendid views over the river. It is no wonder she described it as " the loveliest place in the world." What is also remarkable is that it was her holiday home, its affluence is such that when you sit in the old fashioned deck chairs outside, as most people do, you can only dream of having that sort of life. Her success as a prolific writer of some 86 books is to be marvelled at.

One can also reach it by boat on the Greenway ferry, or by steam train to Greenway Halt, but only if you are fit, as the walk to the house takes some 40 minutes.

The last day

All too soon, the last day arrived. We started off with a game of tennis, then we went to visit Salcombe, a very picturesque town set on a sea front, with walks around passage ways with a wall to protect one from falling into the sea. Salcombe sells its own brand of icecream, so there wasn't a ninety nine in sight, and apparently it's famous all over Devon.

Then we went onto Blackpool Sands, which is actually shingle, although a very wide beach. I did no more than paddle that day, that was until a sudden wave wetted my shorts. That was all I could do, as I had left my swimming costume at the hotel. We then finished off the day by swimming in the open air pool at Buckfastleigh, and that evening, which was our last one, we ate steak, washed down with red wine.

Then it was time to pack, and after another hearty breakfast, head home to Kent. It was a very enjoyable week, and I am sure it won't be too long before we go back to Devon.
