Jesus in My Heart

Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober; be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 1 Peter 5:7-9

Memere always had many experiences to share with me, and I loved going to her home and listening. She made God real and personal. I relied on her in the midst of our chaos for all the guidance I could get! Whenever I had a problem, I would go and see her and she'd pray with me. She opened God's word and He would answer her! I trusted her completely and always received such reliable counsel. I started to know for myself how much He cares for all of us. I began to see Him more and more in my life as I grew older.
I studied several Bible lessons through the mail and completed them all. I was eager for them to arrive, and enjoyed my time studying. As God showed me His truths, I was learning how to make my life different and was hungry for more!
One day a man came over to our house selling Christian books. I begged my mom to buy The Bible Story set of ten. It took a little persuasion, but she finally gave in and bought me the much coveted books. I was so happy and thankful!
I read all of them to my brother, Dennis, explaining everything I could; telling him there was more to life than what we were seeing here at home. There was a loving God watching over us and He cared that we were hurting. My little brother always listened to the stories, and at last we had a place to go and get away from the hurtful surroundings of our lives. When we would sit together and read, we were brought into a quiet place. Thank you God, for touching my mom's heart and influencing her to say, “Yes, we can buy those books.” Now I had my Memere and those wonderful Christian books to go to, and find the peace I desperately needed.
I was baptized at the age of thirteen along with my two cousins, Jimmy and Linda, Aunt Terry's children. Millie had been going to church with me, but for some reason wasn't able to attend my baptism. I was extremely happy when I got home, but the rest of the family did not share in my joy. After I was baptized, I would sit at the old upright piano, teaching myself the hymn, “My Jesus, I Love Thee,” which was my commitment to God to love Him forever. To my dismay, my parents sold the piano for money.
