This is my opinion piece on why Chipotle should be boycotted

Chipotle Fires Domestic Violence Victim

I read a disturbing story of how Chipotle fired a woman because she had been a victim of domestic violence. Her name is Natasha Velez and she is now suing Chipotle. I hope she wins. I will be boycotting Chipotle until they can treat domestic violence victims with respect and train their employees on how to be accepting of domestic violence victims instead of treating them like they're somehow less than human.

Chipotle needs to be reminded that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced domestic violence in their life time. To take away Ms. Velez's job at a time when she needed it most, could have very well sent her back to her abuser, as it takes 5-7 times for a victim to be able to finally stay away from the abuser. One of the many reasons victims go back to their abusers is because there is no one there to support them. Since no mention is made in various news articles of Ms. Velez returning to her abuser, she is exceptional and a hero.

According to NCADV (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence) almost 1/3 of women homicide victims were killed because of their partners. Thankfully, Ms. Velez did not become a tragic statistic, despite Chipotle's heinous actions.

The Family and Medical Leave Act is for situations such as this, why was that not an option to Ms. Velez? It is obvious Chipotle does not honor its "integrity to food" advertising if it cannot even let one domestic violence victim keep her job. And because of this I ask you to join me in a boycott of Chipotle until they rectify their "integrity" (i.e. lack thereof) issues.

Ms. Velez a hero in my eyes. She has endured something no one should ever have to endure and continues to have to fight for her rights. Ms. Velez you have my full support.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence. Please know that you are not alone. There are support systems and people that will help you all you have to do… is reach out. Please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 | 1-800-787-3224 (TTY) you can also now chat with them online. There is also a website called Women's Law that lists local, state hotlines, and local shelters. You can find the Women's Law Projects website listed below in "My Sources."

As a domestic abuse survivor I can't believe that this company would be so heartless as to fire an employee for something she had done to her and not something she had done herself to harm the company. This was a truly eye opening article about Chipotle.
