Soon it will be December, and Christmas is approaching rapidly. Am I ready? Read on to find out more.

Christmas Gets Nearer

Well I have no idea what has happened to 2017, except that it has flown by for me. Tomorrow is the last day of November, and Christmas is approaching rapidly. Nowadays I like to be properly organised for Christmas, but it wasn't always like that.

When the family were growing up, I was a shop manager, and Christmas was by far our busiest time. We sold fine china and lead crystal, as well as many other prestige gifts, and I can still remember the days when customers lined up with their precious gifts in their hands, waiting patiently to be served. It was our job to find the box, and then gift wrap it. There was always such a great spirit of Christmas in our shop, and we had such loyal customers, so we were loyal back, and often stayed late if they wanted to buy something that day for a special occasion.

My job was time consuming and demanding, although I loved it, so most things were left until Christmas Eve, no matter how weary I was when I got home, there were presents to be wrapped, and vegetables to peel for dinner the next day, so I was always late to bed that night.

These Days

Nowadays I have indulged my hobby of writing books, and I spend a lot of time promoting them, either by giving talks, or selling them at Craft Fairs. This is mostly at weekends, so I have some time to spare during the week.

This week I have made good use of my time. I have been to Canterbury and done my shopping before the crowds set in. I am lucky that I have the choice of weekdays to go. I am now in process of filling out my Christmas cards, and next week will find me wrapping the presents.

If all this sounds wonderful and organised, don't be fooled. I am beginning to realise that if I put things off until a later date, I run out of time, get very stressed, and find it hard to get them done. So for my own self preservation, I do them now.

Years ago

Nothing and no-one could convince my dearly beloved to go Christmas shopping. He didn't like crowds, nor driving around car parks trying to find a parking space. So every year, my main present from him was money, but he did buy me small stocking presents to open on the day.

On Christmas Eve, he finished work at lunchtime, and the afternoon found him popping in the shop to say hello to me, and then going round the local shops. He was always very laid back about it, and always managed to find thoughtful surprises for me. He never seemed to worry about shops being sold out, and for him they never were, but by the end of Christmas Eve, our gift shop was sadly depleted of a lot of the best items.

We would then get the very last minute buyers, who had been enjoying the spirit of Christmas in their local pub. The present for their partner was more like a peace offering, and it was fun helping them to choose something that would appeal to her, and hopefully she wouldn't be throwing at him!

These days my Christmas fairs last until 23rd December, and I am happy to point out that a book makes a great gift for any occasion. If I can come home this year with a virtually empty suitcase, then I know I will have done well.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE.

Carol, Merry Christmas to you and your family. I really enjoyed reading about your Christmas. It's been a busy year and the month of December has been busy and hectic most of the time. We've decorated, shopped, wrapped and baked. Now that Christmas is over and the New Year is approaching I'm enjoying these days of rest. Happy New Year to you and your family.
