Circumstances Influence Action; Let us Change Them

We are unable to come out of the rut of vicious circumstances we have created over time and most important is the inability to agree to disagree which is a hallmark of democracy and freedom. It is time to agree on the fundamentals to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps to better our circumstances to a level playing field and to live and let live.

Victim of Circumstances

We have heard of the axiom – victim of circumstances. We fall prey to circumstances we find ourselves in but we fight to get to a better level in life and that is a fact from time immemorial. Yes, the vast majority has to grin and bear it as society as a whole is set in its ways and overnight changes are hard to come by. Individually we can better ourselves more in terms of our thinking and action towards a path that is enduring and rewarding in terms of peace of mind and betterment of society as a whole. However, it is tough to find sustenance in an island devoid of oneness of living and yearning. Though we try as individuals we are often pulled down by few who set our agenda. We are left to react, take evasive action; the 9/11 incident has changed our lifestyle as we suspect even our shadows in terms of security measures put in place and the restrictions for funds transfer etc. It is sort of one step forward and many back for certain matters that we took for granted. So we need to be dynamic and take it on the chin to forge ahead. Few manage to leave a dark shadow over the rest with their actions.

Tyranny of Minority

We are often overcome by frivolous and emotional issues that lead us to a lifestyle of endless strife. Before one fire is put out many are waiting to take its place! Are we psychologically wired to such a lifestyle, needling others, creating issues where there are none? Come to think of it, we can even live as a society in isolation, forget even countries. The sun, wind and air are everywhere and also nature to sustain us. Then why the endless desperation and despair created by us? Can we not show others how to live by example? Do we need their land and subjugate others to pursue our life? Hot spots are festering inviting even distant countries to ready for wars. That countries have enough within their own borders to live well is clear and trade need not lead to wars; in fact, it should make us cooperate for mutual benefit. But our leaders are too engrossed in their set ways, to prove points, that the majority is hardly interested in. So a minority is having their way at the cost of the vast majority.

What We Yearn for

That the majority wants peace of mind and to be left alone is clear and that has been a fact of life all through. For that the essentials of living have to be made available. The governments elected by the people should make sure it is done and that will be the major step towards peace and coexistence. Endless politicking has led to a situation where people have become cynical but the silver lining in many countries is that they depend less on the government. They have realized at their cost – no one owes them a living, be it democracy or otherwise. They know they have to acquire the needed skill-set for survival and it is changing faster by the day.

We should not be entrapped in hopeless circumstances like how the Syrian refugees find themselves in. They are uprooted from their homeland, culture, and take risky escape routes to foreign culture and countries as unwanted guests. Who created this nightmare for them? Why not their own provide them abode, at least temporarily, than force them to take desperate measures with children in tow! I attach a link to a heart-rending real life story that highlights the plight of one such family. Similar situations have been repeating all through history – it is not nature driven but created by us; hatred generated from too much intoxication of bigotry and narrow religious fervor! There is only one creation, and Creator, but we have created many Gods and still it is work in progress! And we are ready to defend our own God by killing even innocents because they believe in another!

Time for Reawakening

Is it not time for reawakening or, do we need more of such perverse incidents to drive home the point that we need to change the circumstances we have dragged ourselves in through our thoughtless actions. Yes, we are blessed with more awareness and ability compared to other species to chart our path, but though we have made scientific progress we are traversing the wrong path knowingly! Can we not restore to an earlier time with regard to what it was before our modern lifestyle of endless strife for any reason or no reason even? Let bygones be bygones should be starting point. Circumstances should not negate our inner voice to find an inclusive ride. Now we are paying a high price due to our intolerance and bigotry to accept the variety implied in nature and creation. True democracy and freedom is in distilling the essence from the heady mixture of diversity to chart our path – not allow few to obfuscate ours for their selfish ends. The majority has to assert and stay the course for us to forge ahead. To start with let us bid goodbye to nuclear weapons as everyone is in a race to acquire them to add to their family jewels – even those countries where most do not enjoy a square meal a day! Otherwise the circumstances will get murkier by the day leading to our demise as a race and species – we have a say how it will turn out in the end.

Siva, One of the saddest things about turning on TV news is that there is always some place where people are suffering and the tyrant minority always strikes the innocent majority who are forced to struggle for the basics of life. I question every day whether it is time to strike back for the decency of the everyday man?

Yes Peter, the majority is left helpless most of the time and by the time they are able to muster support for action the damage is done.

The link I have provided to the heart-rending story of the travails of the Syrian mother at having to hand over her baby daughter to a stranger will melt anyone's heart.

It is time the majority united to keep the evil at bay - one cannot just leave it to others; we need some other platform, base, for concerted action - siva

Siva, One of the greatest challenges is that any strike-back against tyranny must be organised, but in organising it must ensure it doesn't breed future tyranny.

JBT, I feel even in supposed democracy and freedom the majority will ends when the periodical vote is cast. The boss remains the same as leaders we elect are not able to carry out the agenda based on which they were elected for one reason or another.

Tyranny associated with socialism, communism and fascism are different and quite stark. My point is that the majority writ should run and the underlying factor is pandering to the greed of few should stop. They are responsible for wars - stop it in the bud; stop arms proliferation and turn attention and resources towards food, shelter and health - siva

The main issue is a minority is able to set the agenda catering to their selfish ends.

Outside interference serves only to unify the disparate groups against the "common enemy". This is clear when the bulwark against extremism that was present within was removed by thoughtless actions of "outsiders". The field was then thrown open, free for all, for bigots to move in and capture the turf. For the majority this has meant "from the frying pan to the fire"!

Agreed Peter, the strike-back should be organized but should be led by their own as culture plays a vital part - siva

There is a saying: "What you resist, persists." As evidenced in this week's elections, here in Canada, the needs to be a better way. Hope is a very good motivator. So is Love.

Thanks Christopher, without hope our lives become meaningless. I do hope Justin Trudeau is able to look ahead and bring about changes than get bogged down by frivolous issues..

Sadly a virulent minority is able to subjugate the majority as we see in the Middle East. The most innocent are made to run for their lives leaving their possessions behind ending up at the mercy of strangers to their lifestyle. They are forced to react to injustices by running away from their homeland - siva

Siva,
I do think the majority of people want peace, but they all want it on their terms, as evidenced by the elections which keep putting the warmongers in office and the public outcry when any leader exhibits any hint of pacifism.

I do believe we are evolving beyond the greed which has defined humanity for most of history, but it does not seem to be happening fast enough for me to witness in this lifetime.

Thanks for sharing a thoughtful reflection.

Thanks Onenow for your input and motivation.

We play into the hands of the conniving minority when we lose our focus to stay united. Armament factories know no recession and their wares find their way into "wrong hands" even! The vicious are satiated with supplies and they use them against even those who fight for one square meal a day! The reason is intolerance, blind belief, as if God has told them to kill others!

Yes, our tails are on fire and we should put them out in unison - League of Nations was formed after WW 1 to remain dormant and now we have the much ignored UN!

Our leaders promise to put an end to wars but their hands are tied soon after elections by vested interests; sort of whoever is in power, the boss remains the same!

We need leaders who are the real deal, ready to lose battles, but win the war of peace in the end! Now we have those who engage in daily battles for their very existence.

Yes I agree, I too may not see better days in my lifetime but I hope to make it happen from up above unless there are more pressing assignments in my hand then! siva

Dear Siva well said, yet how do you overcome the tyranny of the minority? They have the money, power, influence and resources and can therefore exploit the masses at their will. How do we turn against this minority? Governments become powerless against them because of vested interests. How do you get the majority to be united so that they can check the tyranny of the majority? In theory yes that is the only way the tyrants can be brought to book, but is it a practical reality?

Thanks dear Subra for your input and sharing your wise thoughts.

Sadly, we have not found a way out of this cesspool of oppression. Now America and Russia are pursuing their personal agenda in Syria and the irony is UN is ignored though both are Permanent Members with veto powers!

Tony Blair admitted couple of days ago that outside interference helped to worsen the situation in the Middle East; in fact helped the rise of ISIS. The majority at ground zero were left as bystanders as they could not support outsiders beyond a point. That emboldened few to fill the gap that was created by the ouster of Saddam, Gaddaffi etc.

Again it is clear outside actions help enrich the arms merchants who have no compunction to sell to all and sundry. When one is having a weapon why not use it to cow down others and bring them to their heels like it is happening in Syria where the majority has jumped to escape from the frying pan to the fire?

Unity is strength but it is more of - off with his head in terms of actions of leaders who think they have to flex their muscles than work towards peace which to put bluntly - is not sexy!

It is time the majority everywhere shouted from their roof tops - thus far and no more, please leave us alone; we did not elect you to create wars - siva

Your articles are always a wake up call for us all.

We fall asleep in other's beds, and then wonder why they are uncomfortable.

We need to get back to basics as you say, and make our own lives, or beds as we want them to be, not as they are made for us by others.

And yet, we must not selfishly pursue just our own wants, we must give our own bed to another when they have none, as Jesus told us to do.

It is a fine line we must walk, and its getting finer all the time.

It will look wider though if we walk on it fully awake.

Your articles help us to wake up, thanks siva

Thanks Spirited for your insight with regard to issues we face on a daily basis. I like to address those that dog us without an end in sight. We have the media analyzing from all angles but the solutions look intractable.

The reality is a minority is able to hold the majority to ransom. If Saddam and Gaddafi were tyrants, I do not know how to classify the present coterie who just kill for any reason or no reason whatsoever.

Hopefully, we are able to remove the chaff from wheat in terms of our thinking so that we find focus to attack and overcome the root causes of evil. However, it looks like the powers that matter want to prolong the agony! siva

Mankind continues to do things in the same old way but expecting a different result. We are like the schoolboy who keeps on adding 2+2 hoping to get an answer other than 4. Will we ever learn? I hope so as I do see some small changes coming. Blessings

Thanks Kingwell, I too see many silver linings on the horizon.

When we agree on a common agenda that highlights coexistence and inclusive path, then the pieces should fall in place.

However, I worry whether we will be fast enough as we tempt fate as part of our lifestyle! siva
