Commentary in response to Canada's fear based reaction to Muslim immigrants during the 2015 federal election.

In Canada, we are heading into a Federal Election. The Conservative Party, headed by Stephen Harper, has created a whirlwind of fear, in response to a Muslim immigrant who wanted to wear a niqab during a citizenship ceremony (even though there is no dress code, and the ceremony is just a formality after immigrants spend years of examination before being accepted) This has prompted an outcry from people who fear Isis and Sharia Law taking over (which is just ignorant)

What is this thing, Civilization?

What are many Canadians afraid of during this time of unprecedented immigration from cultures different from the white-European norm? Here's some facts that are not fully taught in your history class: Europeans came to the Americas starting around the late 15th century - then, for over 300 years, the French and English systematically slaughtered the indigenous people, in massacres too numerous to cite here (In history class, we're taught the names of explorers who discovered the New World and happily traded with the Native Americans - there were some civil wars between the French/English, and each side aided by different indigenous tribes). Later, the Canadian government, in partnership with Anglican, Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, tried to squash whatever remaining indigenous culture was left by forming residential schools and abducting over 150,000 children from their homes to assimilate them into the new world (in essence, attempting to 'civilize' the barbarians).

In 2015 North America, the collective fear of karma is rearing up. The flow of immigrants around the planet is vast - different cultures with other ways of doing things are moving in to unfamiliar places. We are currently afraid of militant groups like Isis, and their harsh interpretation of Shariah Law, coming here, fighting and forcing us into living their ways - Sound familiar? Except, these militant groups are not coming here - people coming here are fleeing those very same militants.

Perhaps our insight into humanity has developed enough to realize that we are one human family, albeit with various views about life itself. Yes, some old practices of certain cultures need to be addressed (like female genital mutilation) - not by blatant discriminatory voices, rallying the ignorant, but by a path of education and dignity, aiming to teach and inform about inalienable human rights.

A civilized world is not Us (the civilized) versus Them (the uncivilized) - It is a world of different races, creeds and colours, sitting at the table of mutual respect. In every culture, there are unacceptable habits and dogmas - Civilization should mean that we are able to weed out those ideologies that do not serve the greater good of human growth and potential.

We are at a time of unlimited information, with the ability to seek out whatever it is we want to know, whenever we feel like it. We are no longer tethered to textbooks, 6 o'clock newscasts and schools of thought forcing their way into our psyche by those who wish to control and standardize. It is apparent now that old civilizations, including ours, are crumbling under the weight of wisdom and compassion felt by many from all different walks of life - and those who do not recognize it will continue to blame and fear and divide themselves from others.

There are the good and bad in all faiths and even among atheists and agnostics. However those migrating to other countries should not stand out like a sore thumb but try to merge with the culture they move into.

I feel the general angst among the people is due to the fear of religious fanaticism highlighted in the media.

As for myself, I would like the majority within each faith to speak out against intolerance within their faith and not allow few to hijack their religion towards intolerance of others - siva

I think a very naive post. I suggest you read Dr. Peter Hammond's book: Slavery, Terrorism and Islam: The Historical Roots and Contemporary Threat to realize what Islam will do in Europe and Canada

Islam extremists may try to invade the western world, and we'll see what happens if they do...I will read the book you mention - Still (perhaps naively) i believe that all religions/cultures have extremists that do not represent the majority of people within those religions/cultures. I know many Muslims, Christians, Jews and Atheists - all stand together in solidarity against human rights violations and extremism.

If you are familiar with Madan's comments on other posts you will understand that he is a rabid Islamophobe.

That Stephen Harper would play the fear card to get re-elected reveals him as the petty, mean, vindictive, small man that he is. God forbid the Conservatives should be returned to power in Canada.

Hi Steve, pal just venture out of USA and see what is happening.. I have deeper respect for Islam than most, yet there is a devious plan to establish a Islamic caliphate. Amen.

Mandan: Just because people have devious plans doesn't mean they will be realized.

Steve: If Stephen Harper is re-elected, that was a devious plan come to fruition - and there will be backlash from even the most peaceful people.

I thought your post was well written and thoughtful. For myself, I fear the Islamists, mainly because their holy book tells them it is alright to lie to us and to kill us if we don't submit (which, I believe, is what "Islam" means: Submission". I will not submit.

I think The Christian Extremists running much of the developed world are to fear as well - When there is one extreme, the other with of course manifest. This is why it's important to not engage in those battles.

With Christian extremists alone, it is already a headache. Now with the Muslim extremists sprouting, the gate of hell is totally open! Cheap labour and a few virgins are not worth having the ants on your head. Won't you agree?

agreed pohtiongho - extreme beliefs with no leeway are much of the problem in this world.
