Common Agenda Stymied by Petty Squabbles

Though the rigmarole of elections are gone through in democratic countries the majority will fails to prevail. What use getting elected based on an agenda which cannot be followed up after the elections due to inherent weakness in the system? Technology should help remove roadblocks and break impasse by seeking majority will more often.

History Repeats

Do we have a common agenda? I feel it is quite obvious – it is to add value, quality to our lives, and being at the apex of all species we have a higher consciousness that our actions will impact all others too. However, though we have individual space to seek refuge in according to our mental make-up, our common agenda is set at naught by petty squabbles that leave a trail of disaster and consume the time of our leaders. We find ourselves at each other’s throats when emotions run amok and relegate common sense to the background. There is always the danger of brinkmanship leading to war and misery. Do we rake up issues as our actions point to having such a DNA? Is it a challenge thrown at us to overcome emotional outbursts that can lead to our succumbing to them when we cross the line? It is survival of the fittest even among species and we are not excluded! The agenda set before us for getting elected by our leaders are tantalizing but soon the same old reality stares at us. We go one step forward and soon it is back to square one though our scientific progress has helped us not to dwell on our shortcomings that have continued to dog us.

Democracy at Crossroads

Our leaders have noble goals – at least going by their promises during election time! But after getting elected based on an agenda, mainly to uplift the poor, they hit a brick wall! They fight enemies both within and outside and the common citizen is left to hope against hope for a better tomorrow. Is it all what democracy is about – fighting even hitherto invisible enemies? And then when our leaders run out of ideas they go after those away from own countries. In poorer countries who else but the immediate neighbor? They fight even over wastelands that contribute nothing to the welfare of 99%! It is just an emotional tool used by our leaders who are instigated by the greed of weapons dealers. And in the event of wars those from the 99% get killed – they are treated digits, like after we pass on we are dead bodies, no more identified by who we were and quickly disposed of and faster by the day!

It is clear the yearnings of common citizens from a democratic set-up end up in smoke. When the rich become richer at the cost of the poor the political and economic systems prove unfair. And the worth of a person is translated to how much he is worth materially. Such a value system undermines the effort of many who work all their lives to uplift others. Now the flaws of such a value system are dividing the society where few manage to deprive others of their rightful rewards and when it leads to a divisive society everyone pays the price except the 1% who lives in ivory towers! In effect, democracy and freedom are hijacked by few time and time again. The greatest challenge we are faced with is how to plug the loopholes before anarchy envelopes us.

Many Generals

Though we elect a leader we have many generals calling the shots and most are impostors! They manage to be in the limelight setting our agenda away from what the majority voted for. The irony is what looked simple before elections turn out to be non-starters as hidden agenda takes over piling obstacles along the way. Our elected leaders seem to be beholden to the self-styled generals and this process is repeated ad nauseam to the consternation of the majority whose dreams end up in smoke! There are wheels within wheels in the functioning of political systems and the voters are not calling the shots after all!

Fix the System

Can we fix the faults of the system? Why it gets so complicated? I feel it is because of hidden hands of few who blind others of reason with their power mainly through their wealth. The common citizens have to assert in every way possible. They can do so by telling our elected leaders unequivocally to deliver on the agenda based on which they were elected to power. Those defeated can fight along but have to respect the common agenda that will best serve the poor majority as the rich can take care of themselves! It cannot be – citizens propose and the powerful disposes forever which is an insult to democratic system! Hopefully, citizens find a way to assert on a regular basis than only during election time and then taken for granted. With modern technology it should be easy to find a way for the citizens to decide on controversial issues that may crop up so that majority view prevails and that is what democracy and freedom are about and not some playing one against another whoever comes to power. It is time indeed to make a break from a past that has failed to deliver. An inclusive society will change our landscape and lead to less stress all around.

Well said, Siva
Why aren't we using the technology to create a more democratic society. Many more young people would get involved if they could vote online.

Yes C D Moore, when we have issues that are not on the election agenda and are way out of the ordinary it should be possible with use of technology to get majority's approval. This should be the basis like when declaring war on another like during the Iraq adventure. It is clear the ordinary Iraqis did not benefit as it ended-up free for all looting and killing that are still ongoing - siva

It seems that many enter politics with good intentions but are then corrupted by a system that favors special interests. In America, money has completely corrupted politics. There should be absolutely no private funding of political campaigns. Great post, as always, Siva. Thank you.

Thank you Steve for the moderation and star rating, appreciated.

In India a new leader has been elected with an overwhelming verdict. Indians have great hopes and the defeated will lie low left licking their wounds for the time being, but eventually they will play on the emotions of people to rake up their hidden agenda. It is said that a disciplined person can become undisciplined within such a chaotic political system. The sad reality is the richest will try to outdo each other to get their plum pickings and as usual it is the 1% that set the agenda. So Prime Minister Modi should assert with the power of massive mandate he is given and do what is right for the people - siva

Perhaps democracy is the biggest mirage of them all. Should we not seek to avoid the desert that creates such mirages? Nice article, as usual Mr Siva, thought provoking.

Thanks Snerfu for sharing your thoughts. There are sadly wheels within wheels in democratic system and it proves a mirage. It is now like everyone complains about the weather and no one does anything about it. Just like burning polluted fossil fuels bring us and our fellow travelers misery and clean energy will benefit all, we should also try to fine tune the system so that majority will prevails all the time.

Chinese leaders tell their people - look at the anarchy within democratic systems where nothing is possible - I stay corrected - anything is possible for the privileged few!

the government fights invisible enemies and a few invented ones as well. That wouldn't be too bad if they didn't use our money to do it with!

Thanks Spirited. The agenda looks different after every election with the defeated going for the jugular from day one after their defeat! The victor is always evading body blows and reeling from well directed ones below the belt as well! siva

Very true, it just cannot be that the people propose and the powerful dispose but the sad part is that is the case. Hope citizens find a way of asserting themselves on a day to day basis. India does have hope with the new PM I believe. Great write.

Thanks Vellur. With technology it should be possible for the majority to get more involved and not wait for another five years to assert. PM Modi is into social media and, hopefully, he will know the pulse of the people on a regular basis. The 99% want rule of law and fairness and not for the 1% to run amok with unbridled greed - siva

Agreed Ptrikha. It depends on how much support he can get from public. If people want progress he has the capacity to deliver like he did in Gujarat. Chinese leaders know people will close their eyes as long as they develop faster than others. In India people want the egg and the omelet meaning they want free for all democracy and progress! I do wish we know where to draw a line and make a trade-off - siva

Sivaramakrishnan, the 'system' has an agenda that runs pretty much like life. There is always a problem that calls for our attention--some screaming louder than others.

So we have to prioritise, then plan our work ahead, and then--work our plan with diligence. Solutions will come, but only if we resolve to tackle these issues to make our country--and our lives--better.

Thanks Patricia for your thoughts. Democratic system gets hijacked as the majority asserts only at the time of voting. Soon after the elections, a minority prevails with their own selfish agenda. Our leaders are caught in a vicious circle. Those who help them are out to get their pound of flesh. It is time we found a way out and I believe the only way is to stick to the agenda based on which the leaders got elected. We now have technology to resolve major impasse by getting approval of citizens whenever needed - siva

Dear Siva, The majority view prevailing in controversial issues because of modern technology is sound in theory but is fraught with massive hurdles in practice. India is an excellent example, where Modi has been swept to power. You mentioned that Modi "should assert with the power of massive mandate he is given and do what is right for the people". In theory good, but look at the number of high-profile bureaucrats, law enforcement officers, revenue collectors, village chiefs, police inspectors etc etc who take the law into their own hands and get into corrupt practices with impunity. How will Modi stop these people from being corrupt and get them to be transparent and accountable for their actions? Can Modi monitor them effectively? Of course the ordinary citizen can use modern technology, but how does he get past these corrupt, incompetent and crooked officials?

Thank you dear Subra for speaking out and showing concern for the 99%. The only way is for them to assert, bring out and act against injustices rather than expecting leaders to do it for them. If they cry foul that will enhance the authority of leaders. But if they acquiesce in to corruption then the momentum will be lost. Modern technology helps a lot through transparency and using technology to overcome needless human contacts and decision making at every level. When people really want change, it should happen.

Chinese leaders are now very conscious of the common citizen's feelings and it should be more so in a democracy. The very election of Modi is a vote against the ills that prevailed in India for too long. It is worth recalling - God helps those who help themselves and certainly not those who do not help others and go to the extent of duping them. It is time for democracy in action at every level - siva
