Cricket Test Ends in Thrilling Draw

When South Africa came in to bat in the fourth innings of their test match against India yesterday they were facing a mammoth target of 458 to win and even a draw seemed an unlikely result.
South Africa got off to a good start in their chase with Alviro Petersen and captain Graeme Smith putting together a partnership of 108 before Smith was run out. Hashim Amla was dismissed soon afterwards and South Africa were under serious pressure. South African fans would secretly have been hoping that rain would come to their rescue, but the inclement weather Johannesburg has suffered over the last few weeks stubbornly stayed away.
After the early dismissal of Alviro Petersen and Jacques Kallis, the situation was looking really dire, but Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers were not in a mood to lose and they stayed together for the full second session and well into the third. Just when victory was looking likely, however, de Villiers played a careless shot and was bowled. JP Duminy followed soon after and the pressure was on once more. Vernon Philander batted well and the chance of victory was still there until du Plessis was run out with 16 runs needed. Philander and Dale Steyn were taking no unnecessary risks and in the end South Africa finished 8 runs short of a world record run chase.
In the end a draw was probably the right result in a test which neither side deserved to lose.

It was a narrow draw for the Indian team.
