December 21 – Let The Change Come From Within

If the past is any guide we will wake up on 22nd like on any other day. However, we should make use of the frenzy leading up to 21st to do some real soul-searching as life as usual can lead to apocalypse without warning! The change should come from within us to sustain.

Time for Reflection

Many theories abound that portent to momentous, even life altering, events at the end of Mayan calendar on December 21. Of course, many do not believe in such as the end of the world has been predicted umpteen times all through our history. It is a fascinating subject that catches anyone’s attention. So if past is any guide everything should be just hunky-dory – but things could have been much better. The main reason is obvious – we just cannot live in harmony. The issues come one after another hogging the daily headlines. Then it is no wonder that few feel we could do with some “outside” help to hold our hands – but that can not only lead to a dependency syndrome but also a slavish mentality and could we could well be subjugated! We have to pay a price to get something in return; nothing is free. Nature nourishes us and is a great teacher in many ways but we ignore and even try to destroy what is provided gratis. That also raises an uncomfortable question – do we deserve a second chance? Why not whoever in control press the delete button and be done with it! But we feel life has to go on even on our terms – not a convincing way to seek extension of our lease!

A Turn for the Better

It looks like December 22 will be just another day of relief, celebration, red-faces, one-upmanship and even chaos – just life as “normal” as we know it! We are likely to forget the frenzy as we face our daily challenges. But should we let slip an opportunity to make a deep soul-search and refocus on our goals? Or will it be similar to New Year celebrations – the trough after the high? In what way we can feel thankful for and celebrate a new innings where we are still in charge? We have enough people with dynamism, feel and the foresight to identify the ills plaguing us but we are unwilling to make the needed change. The issues, though vital for our long-term well being, are soon forgotten. It is not life threatening at the moment so why change course now with the inconvenience that they entail? But can we at least become more aware of them on a daily basis, move towards lifestyle changes to secure our well being and sustainability? These should become our habit when we are aware of the benefits that we reap sooner than later.

Check List for Brighter Future

The changes needed that is clearly written on the wall are:

1. Unity: Our bane is always our disunity. We are at each other’s throats for no reason. We work at cross purposes even bringing the whole house down and start rebuilding again and again, thereby going around in circles. Once bitten twice shy - is forgotten as history repeats itself. Unity is strength but we just ignore the obvious. We invest in state of the art weapons for our own destruction in the end – digging own graves; reaping what we sow knowingly.

2. Live and let live: This is the best policy but mostly ignored. At the first opportunity we try to bring others down openly and by stealth. We should leave aside the history of suspicion when we had lack of knowledge of others’ intentions. Now most everywhere aspire for peace, freedom and democracy. Let it not be forced down their throats – leave them to evolve by themselves.

3. One world: This is becoming a reality with the masses despite the attempts of few to divide us through every permutation and combination. The intelligence, kindness and greed are everywhere proving that we are all one, from the same source and also disappear without a trace! As one astronaut observed from up above - our world does not have any borders, just an unbelievable, enchanting beauty to behold! Let us preserve our rich culture to enjoy the diversity but borders should blur.

4. Common Challenges: The major challenges are common for all. They require concerted action from everyone irrespective of artificial division. The real beauty lies in making the united effort to rise higher in everyway and above pettiness.

Need of the Hour

All the challenges that we face can be solved by us – why trouble others and invite the unknown? Nature provides us enough and more and each generation benefits from the knowledge passed down to them. So it should just be a progressive path not only materially but also in enlightenment. The mistakes from the past are becoming more obvious as they leave deeper scars physically but also on our psyches. And we know what to do, or more aptly, what not to do! We become more aware by the day of the consequences of our actions. The trial and error ways should be minimized as we are clearer of the causes and effects of our actions. And at the touch few buttons we are crossing borders in a jiffy! However, the real challenge seems to be to channel our immense potential into the right paths. And also to be aware of the potential harm few can do. Destructive powers also grow side by side as evil can never be eradicated.

These highlight the fact that the change has to come within us – positive thoughts and energy supplanting all negativity that holds us back. Only through control of our thoughts and actions will we be able to find meaning and sustenance to healthy living. There is no need for others to show us the way. Why capitulate after having arrived thus far? Hopefully, December 21 is just another day on our planet: It is up to us and within us – the better way!

Thank you Steve for your kind words. I shed tears when I read about the killing of the innocents few hours ago even as I was writing this piece about the changes needed from within. We seem to be going the wrong, unsustainable path in every sense. Some just feel totally ignored, left out of society; the last iota of compassion drained away and replaced by blind rage and venom. We need to take a pause - siva

Changes are best when they are from within but there are many who are averse to that change and cause a lot of harm in the last minute ditches.
One has to learn to adapt in certain things but not everything. I would never adapt to the negatives around me and would caste them out the same way they came and even destroy them.

Thank you Lady Aiyanna. As I have commented above, we should move towards an inclusive society but that does not mean we should be homogeneous in appearance and thinking. People should never feel isolated - siva

Dear Sir, I wish reading your article will help give a positive direction to most of us who are in fear and apprehension of this particular day. I really hope that this inspires all of us to lead better lives and let the 'man next door' also live a life of his own. If we survive the 21st, may we wake up to a better world on the 22nd (though I personally have serious doubts about this, considering what just happened to the girl in Delhi and the shooting in US. But yes, fingers crossed as always).

Thanks Diana for your detailed comments. The world cannot go on forever but should survive the day for now. But nature is ever evolving, reinventing and humanity can also bite the dust. As soul should survive its tenure here, as it is never born, we should enrich ourselves through our rides. In India, there is lack of rule of law and without that democracy is plain anarchy. In the US, assault weapons are being used against the most innocent due to perpetrators feeling isolated from society. Also due to easy availability of drugs that can disorient anyone. Physical decay and death is the one certainty after being born here and let us not waste a moment - we can spread the cheer in many ways. We should all work towards an inclusive society and not treat others as different. Do the right way as per the prompting from within but don't be disappointed with the outcome that is beyond us - siva

So many people are victims of fear and there are always those who take advantage of such people to make money - which of course they must soon leave behind. I admire your writing ability and your wisdom.
