Poetry about the desert can be beautiful or it can scare a person to death.

Devil's Land

Author's Note: If you have ever lived in the desert in the summertime, you will be able to relate to this poem. If you have never lived in the desert, be sure that you have someone with experience with you when you venture out there.

Devil's Land
The heat waves are dancing,
There isn't a breeze.
A desert mirage
Makes a thirsty man wheeze.

The Sun is an oven
And heat boils down,
Reflecting on pyrite,
Bouncing up from the ground.

The devil is laughing,
His furnace is grand.
He knows you can't fight it
And he claims this land.

I'm waiting for sundown,
'Neath an outcropping rock.
I'll sneak through his domain,
I'm not one of his flock.

He won't see me pass
In the cool of the night,
And I'll be in the safety
Of my home by daylight.

You have captured the harsh desert climate with a humorous take too, Don, and thank God for a quick getaway to safety in the end! And to think our planet is still one of the more hospitable of His creations while the rest are the domain of the Devil! Watch out also for the rattlers and puff adders that are devil's pet too while in your hurry to get to safety by daylight! siva
