Do Not Be Afraid To Embrace Death Theme

Despite our fixation with human suffering, wars, oppresion and diseases,it is rare to see writers tackle the theme of death in their books.

Understand The Place Of Death

The few writers who try to write about it portray death as a sudden, painful, unexpected evil, though inevitable for all human beings. The challenge of writing on death is compounded by our cultural and traditional beliefs that view death as a loss to the society.Faced with a society that doesn't entertain discussions on death, other than when it happens, writers have chosen to give the topic a wider berth. The cold shoulder towards death as a theme is understood, given that such a topic requires careful meditation so as to come out as sensitive as a possible.
To understand the place of death in our literary world,we must examine how key figures viewed and approached death.

Sophocles, himself an innovator in tragedy, was described by Aristophanes as a man content among the living and among the dead.He goes further to state that Sophocles died as he had lived in Athens. What does this mean? That his life was equal to his death?

The death of Jesus was very instrumental to the foundation of Christian faith. However, many Christians and Bible scholars have paid little attention to his death, rather putting more emphasis on the ressurection. When Jesus declared on the cross that it was finished,he may have as well alluded some culmination of his mission in earth through death.

Death As A Means To Be Known

In the Apology,Plato portrays Socrates during his trial as a man who openly preffered death to exile.Infact,it is said immediately the death sentence was pronounced ,his speech assumed a lofty tone, indicating his willingness to join the hangman. To Socrates, death was either a dreamless sleep or a journey to a place of true justice.
Death has served to introduce a number of artists, painters, writers, literary critics whom the public had either chosen to ignore or had never heard of.Many artists led an obscured life only to be thrown into the literary limelight upon their demise.Among them are William Blake amd Giuseppe Tomasi de Lampedusa.Largely unrecognized during his lifetime,Blake is today rrevered as a central figure in the history of poetry and painting.Lampedusa had his novel published posthumously after initial rejections by leading publishers in Italy.Today,it is regarded as the best-selling novel of the 20th century.

We Can't Escape Death

Today, the number of people dying is high, making it difficult for the benefactors to share out properties left behind by the deceased.Since death is part of life, the ,most important thing is to put down in writing how we want to be buried. Many people consider writing wills a taboo. We are comfortable talking with our children about weddings but we avoid discussing about death.Others wrongly believe that they will have time to plan for their own burials and how their property will be managed.Whenever we witness drama at someone's death,we should ask ourselves why it was so difficult for the deceased to leave a will.
Creative books on death will help people understand death and plan for it.

This in an enlightening piece. You addressed this topic with dignity. Great job! i'm a Christian but I'm scared at times of the unknown. I feel this is normal and one day I will not be afraid due to the fact I will have an angel with me during my time of passing.

Very interesting article Harris. It seems to me that speaking about death is a religious thing. And I think many people do not leave a will because even at deaths door we believe we will live. After all it is all we know. However I find myself writing a lot on the subject, but then, death has never been a stranger to me.

It is very painful to see a loved one die but the good news is that our loved one will see us again in the afterlife.

death is the purification of the soul. It should not be feared but rejoiced.
