Do We Need Enemies for Unity?

The state of affairs we find ourselves in is due to our inability to coexist based on live and let live, give and take. We should come out of a vicious cycle of negativity wherein we take a view we need enemies to find common ground and unity. Life is much more than finding fault in others to prove our worth. Time to enjoy the unity in diversity and for the majority will to prevail.

Memory Lapses

It seems natural for us to paint someone as an enemy to find common ground. It happens within families, at workplace and even among countries. If one country becomes friendly with another it raises an eyebrow, alarm, among others as something not natural. Hidden agenda is perceived, sort of ganging up against others and finally the new friendship is termed as an unfriendly act! When neighbors are at loggerheads it is taken as par for the course especially among poor countries. Is there a hidden agenda to keep them suspicious of each other and who is behind such deception? The only persons that benefit from such permanent hostility are the politicians within and the arms merchants who are ever ready to supply weapons to anyone for a profit. In fact, they give most profit than any other commodity or goods. We seem to be on the brink of worse holocausts than what we experienced in both world wars but we also tend to have short memory! Both the League of Nations after World War 1 and the United Nations after World War 2 were instituted with much hype but now The UN remains toothless in the background, hardly playing its part; again we suffer from short memories!

Divisiveness Scores

Negativity drives our daily lives without our realizing it stymieing our efforts to progress with unity. We have created needless suspicion and negative vibes to such an extent our actions are doubted. Our faith should be a private matter but wheels within wheels are created to drive a wedge resulting in innumerable permutations and combinations. Why should a path we take interpreted as inimical to another? Are our Gods so frail that they cannot take care of themselves? The only differential I see is in the attitude of the rich and the poor. The former becomes rich at latter’s cost and generosity. And the rich and the poor are everywhere, in every religious denominations and political systems; those from communist countries vie with others from capitalist systems! Some manage to stay afloat despite the strong currents! They remain the bosses and pull the strings whoever is the political leader though actors do change!

Why Terrorism Trumps

It is clear the majority are used as puppets and go through the motions even in societies enjoying democracy and freedom. Their lot remains the same. In fact, they are set one against another and end up as spent forces, hoping against hope of a better tomorrow. A minuscule minority sets the agenda; think of the hassles everyone goes through at airports, bank transactions. A sense of suspicion overrides our daily routines. Come to think of it, it is triggered by the unlimited greed of few and sadly beliefs which are supposed to usher in peace! Yes, the majority everywhere has no issues with coexistence but are overpowered and even made to cower in fear not to attract the evil forces upon themselves! Some politicians are in cahoots with terrorists in the name of “good” terrorism when they play the religious card to the hilt like leopard cannot change its spots, and they find ways to dupe the majority, keep them under their thumbs. Terrorism is pure evil and their acts are soon turned against anyone who opposes their agenda!

Ushering in Peace and Coexistence

The era of peace and coexistence can begin only when we realize the writing on the wall – unity should not create pockets of enmity. Unity and coexistence would happen when we believe in the Creator and humanity. Compassion should have no borders and beliefs should not become a hindrance. It is plain common sense which continues to stare at us when we ignore the fundamentals. Underhand dealings are a mortal blow to trust and confidence. We should reject them at every level. No leader should be allowed to get away preaching hatred and setting one group against another. The motive for our thinking and actions should be above board and the majority has to be on guard all the time. They have been duped all the while resulting in a world replete with hatred and distrust.

Live and Let live, only way

We do not need enemies at all to achieve peace and coexistence. A spirit of live and let live, give and take, should prevail and underwrite all our actions. Those who flout the basics of good relations should be shown their place and they are a small minority anyway. The tables should be turned against them resolutely. Likewise, the majority should assert when terrorists strike anywhere. Now the former put up such disunited front that the evil forces carry the day. And the majority sometimes are defensive, clutch at straws, trying to defend terrorists they have misplaced sympathy for. That great injustices happened in the past should be no reason that they should continue in perpetuity! And some are led to believe that their God is going to intervene on their behalf. I dare say He has better things in mind than trying to defend an ungrateful species. He can wipe the slate clean to reboot the system of creation. We can well find ourselves at the bottom of all species hunted and running for our lives from the word go! Live and let live should be the starting and the ending point and all weapons should be destroyed so as not to contaminate our thinking! Anything that stands in the way of democracy and freedom should have no place if we want a better world from the one now where we put out self-created daily fires due to hatred and enmity trumping reason.

Agreed Mark. The politicians more so especially in Asia and Africa! I am from India and we have a perennial enemy but when I meet them they are just like me with common interests to freely converse. The politicians are the ones who drive a wedge and create a cloud of distrust and suspicion everywhere. Also some fanatical religious leaders who behave as if they are in touch with God on a daily basis!

And the way the big corporations go after one country after another, often countries with boundary and other issues, makes one feel if such corporations would try something to keep conflicts alive.

The worst enemies of the people are arms merchants who have zilch scruples. They light up at both ends driven by greed. We have to be aware of their real motives. If they are driven purely by profits then the majority are taken for a ride. I shudder also to see how much they spend on advertisements like in IPL cricket. These are borne ultimately by consumers. The common people think others are like them and give them too much leeway. Thanks Ptrikha - siva

Yes AniM, the common folks are easy meat for the wily politicians and they keep the majority at loggerheads while in pursuit of their selfish agenda. The vicious cycle should be broken as the plot is getting unraveled through modern, borderless, media. Peace will benefit 99% - siva

Boss, King, President, Prime Minister and others is not a real leader, if they are not able to protect and provide the best solution for the people... But the real leader is a leader who appreciate and act in the power of the people! War, riots and terrorist is the impact of the discontent of the people and become a pillar of the reason for the leader who cover her/his shame itself.
Thank you for sharing this awesome article.

Thanks Viewgreen for your thoughts. I do not know whether great leaders from our past can make an impact now. Politics has deteriorated to such an extent all have selfish agenda. They start from personal, party, special interest groups and country, and that too, maybe!

Like in computer games, we are stuck in a rut now with freedom and democracy, unable to reach a higher level! Maybe, too much of a good thing is also bad, has made us intoxicated! siva

this is very sad because they , as you say so clearly Siva , are the same as us ..they all shed the same red blood when cut .
Many blessings to you dear friend .

Thanks Stella for your input. The majority has no issues at all. I quote from Steve Kinsman's post on Malcolm X "Seeing Muslims of "all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans" interacting with each other as equals had a profound effect on him, and he began to view the Islamic faith as a means of overcoming racial problems."

However, few among all religions take usurped upon themselves to interpret the teachings in a such way to create discord based on beliefs. It is if our Gods are competing against each other - what a narrow minded interpretation as we all come, live, and leave the same way! I have friends from all faiths, no faith too, and they have similar feelings unless they are provoked, belittled - some take them as a joke while others get hot on their collar to become a different animal, sorry to insult the animals! siva

"We do not need enemies at all to achieve peace and coexistence."

I would like to believe this, but at times even our own body works against us.

God has his devil working against him. Everything seems to have something that strengthens them maybe in some unforseen way, but which seems to be working against them for now.

Is an enemy then just a friend in disguise?

Maybe if all is really a oneness.

Only the weeds seem to be able to grow against all opposition even through a concrete path!!

Your article raised many such questions in my mind siva, always a sign of a great article!

Thank you Spirited for your deep thinking and pondering about life and death. And that makes me think too to answer them! Maybe, we need enemies to keep us on our toes and no one promised us that life is a cake walk!

I hope I am fighting the good fight and not realize later that I was not! We need to be on guard all the time - to fear only those from our species mostly as we seem to have got the better of all others. On another level, we have nothing to fear but fear itself, so we should confront what makes us fear - the actions of a minuscule minority emboldened by the generosity of the vast majority.

We are given many challenges almost on a daily basis and we are on a home run now with the devils among us breathing down our necks to take us away from what we dream of to their destination, but we have to give it our best shot to see another day.

The Creator is truly hands-ff like He has been with other species - finally it is fair dinkum as you Aussies say, maybe not a good way to sign off when we talk of oneness! siva

I think it has grown beyond just governments, now anyone who has hate and lots of money, or oil, or a means to acquire such can act as a government, or a religious zealot. It only takes a few with a big hate and lust for blood to bring the world to the edge of war and so they have. The best a poor man can do now is buy food.

We have to increasingly contend with the flip side to scientific progress and weapons proliferation. The power to destroy is increasing exponentially. It is time the major powers buried their differences to unite for survival of our planet as we know it. The story of The Boy who cried Wolf can come true - the false alarms can be a prelude to something horrible that can make 9/11 look like a walk in the park. Agreed, Sunbeam24. I have received comments that nothing much can be done about human frailties that have been in vogue from time immemorial. But now we have countries with nuclear weapons able to destroy the entire world, make it inhospitable at least for our species.

I read a headline that Putin is not looking for a war with the West. Do we know what such a war entails? We need leaders who consider the welfare of the whole world as their responsibility, not the kind who paint others as enemies for political expediency - siva

Dear Siva, We are on a grave collision course with world leaders unable to control the escalation of a very fluid, dangerous situation. The leader who apparently holds the ace is bent upon death and destruction. Leadership should be about compassion and wise leadership not arbitrary power, death and destruction. So long as leaders are devoid of compassion and wise leadership they create enemies because of obsession with power and control. Your comments are very valid Siva

Thank you dear Subra for your thoughtful input to strengthen my take on this vital issue. Is it not ironical that few grams of drugs can mean death to the trafficker but weapons that can kill and maim thousands are being supplied for profit? And countries have to accumulate them at the cost of the very basics that the vast majority of citizens need for survival?

One leader who showed the way recently was Nelson Mandela. Instead of going after the people behind the obnoxious apartheid system, he dismantled it saying the system was wrong and the people only obeyed it. Likewise, we need to get the world we want to live in above board, not the one now where our leaders spent all their time putting out fires but setting more in the process! Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is a good way to start the ball rolling in the right direction - siva

Well said Deepizzaguy. Wars can be prevented if the major world leaders cooperate to draw broad guidelines within which everyone has to fall in line. What has happened cannot be undone - we have to bury the hatchet once and for all. Now weapons are traded for profit and they fall into "wrong" hands eventually. Why not nip this issue in the bud? siva

Minding our own business would solve the problem, I guess. However, having said that, being nosy is tolerable when treated as a solitary entity but prying eyes coupled with maliciousness and a fiery desire for vengeance does the damage. That's the sad part.

Do we need more proof that there can be only one Creator? We can call him by whatever name. Why kill another who we hardly know other than as a human being?Live a worthy life for others to follow - after all imitation is the highest form of flattery. Yes Joyesh, Creation is said to be over billions of years old but according to me it is timeless. Modern man created religions that are few thousands of years old and few among us twist the beliefs to suit their interests, never mind they cause deaths of many innocents in the process. It is time the majority called the shots and let those anxious to please their Gods fight among themselves (conman) than involve the innocents (gullible) - siva

It is at the point that only God can deal with as we remember, no one gets out alive, but then we live forever on the other hand, the hand that picked me up at deaths door step...That is where my faith is, my hope.

Thank you Utah Jay, we too are blessed that you are here with your inimitable thoughts and poetry.

Sadly, progress has meant more of the ability to destroy and it is a matter of time when a small group will threaten to destroy the whole world and take us back to Stone Age! Then the big powers will run against the clock to defuse the situation and hopefully succeed. Prevention is better than cure, so we better take to disarmament in right earnest. Our leaders should not feel they are weak to initiate peace.

My simple take is we have the power to live or perish and we are born with an inner knowing to make a wise choice. It is time to rise to higher awareness and path - siva

Agreed, except when you say that the rich get richer at the expense of the poor. The rich get rich from creating innovations that everyone -- rich or poor -- wants. In the process, the poor get jobs.

The rich do not target the poor to make their riches. The poor are actually the benefactors.

Thanks LeRain, but facts are facts. The rich are getting richer and the poor becoming poorer in most countries. The rewards are lopsided with the rich able to multiply their wealth even in times of financial crisis. Being in the finance industry all my life I know how much leeway the rich are given. The banks are just beholden to them to an extent they charge more interest and expenses to the vast majority who are faced with - take it or leave it - attitude.

I have no issues with those becoming richer through their innovations that benefit all, but I am more about those who corner the resources of countries and park their ill gotten wealth in secret havens. America has the power to fine billions and force the big banks to reveal details of Americans hiding their wealth for the simple reason banks cannot operate without their support. But the billions from others stay hidden with them and that is the height of hypocrisy and inconvenient truth - siva
