Does Poetry pay money?

We all know that poetry won't pay you like other prose articles, however creative you are!

But here is a website that wants to pay you for your poetry.

Does Poetry pay money?

Founded in Chicago by Harriet Monroe in 1912, Poetry is the oldest monthly devoted to verse in the English-speaking world.

Poetry Foundation pays you at the rate of $10 per line (with a minimum payment of $300), and $150 per page of prose, for first serial rights. All payment are made on publication.

Getting paid at $10 per line of your poetry is really astonishingly huge. And for such a remuneration, the poetry must be quite extraordinary, I think.

And after publication, all rights will revert to the author. You will also receive two contributor copies of the issue in which your work appears.

If you want to submit your work, you must register yourself on the POETRY Submission Manager page.

Click here to know What kind of work is Poetry looking for, and how to submit your poems.

I hope the Wikinut poets will utilize the opportunity and try submitting some of their unpublished poems to Poetry Magazine.

Browse the archives and see if you can write quality poems

The magazine claims that it receives over 90,000 submissions per year on an average, from around the world.

When internet was not popular, I used to visit the American Library at Chennai and read Poetry magazine to know how English poetry is written in journals.

Now, you can browse all the issues of Poetry through the archives available on the website. There a huge collection of poetry which you can enjoy if you are an avid reader of poetry.

And that makes a way for learning how the poets have been publishing in Poetry Magazine since 1910.

Here are the links to some simple poem published in the latest Poetry issue (July/August 2011):
Impasse BY AMANDA JERNIGAN (It is pretty easy to write such poetry, but I wonder on what criteria they selected it)

When I Was In Love and Out of All Else BY LIZ WALDNER

And here are links to some of my favorite poems of the past:
The Wreck of the Deutschland BY GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS (This is one of the best in Modern poetry, according to me.)

{i carry your heart with me(i carry it in} BY E. E. CUMMINGS (You can observe how cummings brought freedom to the modern poetry without use of strict punctuation.)

The Waste Land BY T. S. ELIOT

Poetry Magazine Prizes

Poetry Magazine also offers prizes for the poems, letters and criticism already published in the magazine without any formal application for the entries.

The magazine also grants Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowships for the poets who publish their poetry in the magazine.

They announced the 40 finalists for the 2011 Ruth Lilly Fellowships on this page.

There are people who enjoy poetry, though you may not get paid in online submissions at Wikinut or other such websites.

So don't forget to try and submit your best poems for publishing in Poetry Magazine.

Thanks so much for sharing this. very informative and well organized page Surprised it did not get a star, but i guess poetry is not that popular, even on Wiki!

I will try to submit something soon. ;)

Do you think revised versions of old poems are acceptable? (if they are significantly different from the original?)

If the revisions look original, most probably they're acceptable.
You may please check with them.

But I don't think you have any dearth of ideas. Your poetry is astounding and you can create new poems once you get inspired to submit to Poetry magazine.

This is new news for me. I have a poetry book published recently and available everywhere. And I am working on my 2nd collection. Poetry doesn't sell, the publishers say when they reject the submissions, but it's more about a passion to have a collection of poems arranged artistically in a single book. It has its beauty and is much gratifying, even if it doesn't pay much. And there are people who collect poetry books and so on. If a poet wants to earn from his passion, this seems like a good option - could as well be a challenge to take - to write quality poems. Shall check it out soon. :) Informative and what poets need. thanks for this post.
