This is a short poem about "Duchess" the Greyhound.

Duchess

Left in a shed, lone survivor of four
Found just in time, when she could not take more.
Starved to the limit, to weak to eat
When rescued she could not get to her feet.

Taken to kennels life hung by a thread
She was tenderly nursed and carefully fed.
Sores on her body were through to the bone
The kennel staff never once heard her moan.

For many long months kennels were home
Confinement for her; no freedom to roam.
She'd never known fun chasing sticks or a ball
Duchess never had known a dog's life at all.

She outstayed her welcome, time soon would run out
Surely someone to love her was somewhere about?
One family were keen but then lost heart
Thought she might not be strong and they'd soon have to part.

Someone else on that day for whom no task is too great
Decided she couldn't leave Duchess to fate.
One phone call, a car ride, the deed was soon done
One dog on the way to health and a lifetime of fun!

A beautiful brindle, her coat it now shines
While gracefully on her settee she reclines.
It gladdens the heart seeing her so full of life
Sweet natured and trusting despite her past strife.

She now has plenty green acres to roam
She is safe and secure in her Sanctuary home.
Duchess by name, a grand lady of leisure
To watch this fine Greyhound is really a pleasure.
