El Turista (The Tourist)

An old poem and and original art piece about the tourist around us.

Merriam-Webster says...

tour·ist :noun \ˈtu̇r-ist\
: a person who travels to a place for pleasure
: a member of a sports team that is playing a series of official games in a foreign country

"..kinkiness and vanities:"

The Tourist

They arrives in hordes like army ants
In dollar coated robes in search
Of a different kind of food
Something they been quenching for
Oh, all their money can buy
Sight and sites of cultural splendor
Medical tour, wicked kinkiness and vanities

Some arrives so annoyingly like flies
In some scanty clothes without manners
Plenty of disrespect for the gracious host
That peeks on the smell of plastic card
Marked as mighty “master” as new legal tender.
Visiting the farthest and tasting the exotic
departs with a new tattoo or left someone terminally ill.

Some arrives in lousy new purchased clothes
Armed with their country’s flashing gadgetry
You cant even imagined they have small colony
In major cities bringing their own food
Conquering universities reserves for chinks or geeky
They are loved for their far eastern origins
Oriental savvy or for economic honey.

Some arrives bleeding inside their hearts
As they left their homes on iron caged chest
Soldering the pain in exchange of fresh money
They mixed with the crowds transforming into nannies,
teachers, clerks, medical staff or cementing the roads
They hold their tears missing even their own beers
some got lucky some turn into ash urn of mystery

One time or another all once can be a tourist, in me.

I wrote this article as echo to the above pen & ink art piece I originally draw last 2011, The movie of the same title has nothing to do with the poem but the generic "stranger in other land" guest we all know today and way back. The last 50 years tourism has been the bedrock of economic tranquilizer of most places, be it exotic Asian or metropolitan centers of the first world. The tourist in my country comes in all size and shapes, motive and agenda, welcome or unwanted is a waking enigma than a spender to behold..

oh so very true what you write here...tourists are a bane anywhere for sure except those who treat others with respect and wear respectful clothes..
