Elusive Meaning in Life

We have many choices in life. We have own passions and comfort zones. We need to keep them in mind so that our lives are rewarding and enriching.

Humdrum Lives

We tend to worry about the future and relive past hurts as the present pass us by. This is the reality of most common folks. When things are hunky-dory we feel it might not last. When we hit against a wall of setbacks the end seems to be nigh. Only few can take failures as stepping stones to success when the darkness envelope us. Some find solace in drowning their worries through escapism but the reality returns with a vengeance. We can be taught life-skills, but can we get needed skills to survive tough emotional turmoil? We are after those that others too covet, mostly material possessions, and the need for them seem to increase by the day. We need ambition to progress but it finally boils down to a mad race that saps our energy and the time needed to find meaning in our lives. We end up reacting to situations with our choices rather limited. A mad scramble to enjoy the perceived goodies bring us gloom and disappointments. And when we finally reach the summit it proves a Pyrrhic victory in terms of the toll it takes on us and family.

Pursuing our Passion

We have our own passions that we are mostly inborn with. But in our anxiety to secure our lives we are forced to overlook them and get trapped in lifestyles just to exist. Most have to settle for a life of monthly reward and get trapped in a vicious cycle. We are mostly glorified slaves leading lives at others’ bidding. Living lives on our terms is easily said than practiced. As the responsibilities increase our passions go in hibernation! I have tried to rekindle my passions but that means forgetting monetary rewards but I feel having made a good bargain to stick to a life I am comfortable with.

Exercising Choices

We have many choices that come our way and taking the initiative will not upset our apple carts. Again we allow circumstances to dictate the paths we take. I am comfortable with working for people as I am not one to worry about making own living or climb high in the corporate ladder. To run a business independently is a challenge not to be trifled with; not a cup of tea for most! Every choice has its own reward but also has a price to pay.

To cut losses is not easy but I have done it few times after much heartache. The choices we make can go haywire due to circumstances beyond our control so we have to reassess and make a better turn, even a U-turn! We are emotional beings so to make informed choices do not come easy. Much soul-searching is needed but the reality should dictate and decide our course for survival.

Seize the Chances

We feel in comfort zones too often and for me loyalty played a big part in my career path. It goes with the turf that one can be easily taken advantage of by the unscrupulous. Once we lose precious time to assert our rights we find that we have lost the opportunity and have to kowtow. To take the initiative and change course proves rather tough when we get entrenched in comfort zones and other issues like family play a part in our career. We end up taking the beaten path day in and day out; so one should seize the chances than live in despair.

Never Forget the Source

In these tough times many cannot plan our careers when having a job is a blessing by itself! But with the right attitude one can enjoy our stages in life, both career-wise and in family life. Our attitude plays a major part – for me eschewing ego gives great solace and limits the hurt and setbacks – we just take away others ability to hurt us by words and deeds. We get into the right circle thereby too. I find ego and greed are the two greatest stumbling blocks to live life to the fullest and we lose ourselves within self-serving people who tell us what we want to hear; the well-meaning keep away from us.

It is easy to lose our way but when one is prepared to become aware of the choices we have, we are in safer path. Ambition and effort are necessary but our goals have to be honorable. I have seen some rich becoming more selfish the higher they climb the ladder of wealth while only few stay rooted to reality. As the Chinese saying goes – never forget the source of water we drink from. Nothing can replace the human touch and feelings especially of our loved ones. We should never forget how we want to live our final moments in this blessed place when we would yearn for solace and comfort. Our choices should be made keeping those basics in mind.

Thank you Mark. We need to chew over the path we take often and adapt to enrich our lives. My actions are based on sticking to my conscience and I have seen many hit and run only to find themselves deserted by all including own families - siva

This is motivating. "seize the chances" - so true. When opportunity knocks, open the door. How often do we ignore the knock, or shut the door too quickly. "Never ignore the source". I like that too. This article encourages change within ourselves. Michelle

Thank you Michelle for your encouragement. I try to get to the shore of my passion though it cannot earn a living. But our needs can be kept in check so that greed does not take over and dictate our lifestyle! siva

Thank you Loverme. When we face one brick wall after another it is tough to believe in ray of bright light beyond. And let us not blame those who just give up. Nothing succeeds like success and nothing sucks like repeated failures! siva

Thank you Mariah, you are always generous with your support. We need to shift to a higher conscience level as the present has outlived its utility. Even a billionaire lives with hurts. Behind every fortune there is a crime so their conscience pricks most. I have a double take when few hit the richest list when nine out of ten in their countries are struggling for basic needs - siva

Dear Siva

Everyone faces a struggle but it’s the perspective of how one deals with life’s disappointments that matters. Such disappointments should be an impetus for change, and I feel that acceptance and living in the present moment is the best way forward. Living in the past or dreaming of the future is not a reality of living in the present moment. As life is not elusive, its meaning is likewise not elusive! This is what I feel dear Siva.

Congrats once again, dear Siva

Thanks dear Subra for your comment. We all need reassurance and contemplate often about how we live our lives. We should support the majority who often feel lost in their struggle to have a meaningful life. The past hurts and uncertain future can be demoralizing and those visit even those who are wealthy. Living the present moment is the best way but it requires constant effort. At some moments we need to squeeze blood out of stone to maintain our sanity! siva

Good morning, Siva; did not realize I was not following - corrected that immediately. From your article: "To take the initiative and change course proves rather tough when we get entrenched in comfort zones and other issues like family play a part in our career." You have spoken many times about getting out of the comfort zone and it is a message worth repeating, even in a comment. Thank you writing and sharing this. ~Marilyn

Choice is a matter of selecting the right next step on your own path.

If you take a step on somebody's else path it is then not a wise choice because you might lose yourself by doing so.

Siva, this is truly an inspiring article. In my lifetime I've had many struggles but I've always learned from them. I believe we are here to learn. Time has no meaning for me so I'm one of the fortunate ones. Age means nothing to me. I know it must seem strange but that's truly how I am. Everyone always asks why I'm always smiling. The truth of the matter is simple. I know why I am here and with that in mind everything comes secondary to that.

Thank you Nancy, your words are touching. You speak for me too. I live without greed, ego and jealousy. If some are rich materially it is because they gave priority to such a lifestyle. Some like to be in the limelight but I see those who spread the cheer are the ordinary folks who have time for others. I live without expectations and so there are no disappointments. When we have such attitude those with similar bend of mind gravitate towards us. But we should never miss an opportunity to help others. Such a lifestyle rests easy on our conscience and we experience the lightness of being. It is tough to understand the true purpose of our life but we should positively lend our shoulders to the wheel of creation guided by an unseen hand - siva

Siva, I loved your comment. I think it's so true that like minds find each other in this big and expanding world that we live in. If someone comes into our life they are meant to be there. Be it for us to help them or learn from them or they help us. In the deeper meaning of life, there is a plan and we are part of it.

Thanks again Nancy. I have experienced people have a sixth sense how others are, but only few have time for it. Generally we want to be accepted but few like me prefer to stay little aloof not to imbibe a sheep mentality. We all have the same feelings but ego and greed lead us away from the right path. And what is the right path? It is elementary my dear Watson, just listen to our inner voice and when in doubt - do unto others as you would have them do unto you - siva
