The events of the weeks had been indescribably intense with the nightmare of Jesus’ crucifixion and the great wonder of his resurrection. The events of the week had shaken their faith, but as a group they were still hanging in there.

waiting on time

The events of the week had shaken their faith, and their hopes were in tatters. Now he was sitting they were just waiting. It was disorienting. Jesus wasn't there and he hadn't told them what to do next. Peter used to know just what to do events of the week had shaken their faith, and their hopes were in tatters. and two others. They were just waiting around, but mostly they wanted to go fishing, this was there way of putting the events of the past week behind them,
And it nearly worked for peter in his declaration, in his eagerness to please Christ and to be the leader of the pack, much more was required from his service, he needed to crucify his self-will motives and get rid of his own ego.
The other disciples went out and got into the boat with Peter, and that night they caught nothing. Absolutely nothing for the whole night, surely this must have told them that things were not in their favor.

But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. I can almost hear them turning to each other and saying, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But be Peter didn’t know what else to do.
We have toiled all night, at first, they objected to Christ advice, but afterwards obeyed, they had been at it all night, and now they were getting tired, becoming quite wearied; and what was most discouraging of all, their labor was in vain; they had caught nothing: nevertheless, at thy word I will let down the net.

It was disorienting they were waiting on time. Jesus wasn't there and he hadn't told them what to do next. Peter used to know just what to do: prepare the nets and boat, go fishing, take what he caught and sell it in the market. Fishing was hard and sometimes dangerous work. But Peter knew what was expected of him.

It is so easy to fall back on our own devises Gerry ...but I am so glad the Lord knows how to engineer the circumstances that can bring us back on track with Him again.
God bless you
