Mary is determined to see the love of her life on Valentine's Day. it does not matter to her that she will be going to see him, as long as she can spend that special day with him. Read on to find out more.

Everlasting Love

Mary had made a special effort with her appearance today. The hairdresser had cut her hair and washed it, even given her a bit of a fringe, and as she wore it in a bob, she was pleased to see when she looked in the mirror, just how much it shone with vitality.

She had discarded the trackie bottoms she usually wore, and put on a colourful long skirt, teamed up with a red blouse, which made her feel bright and happy. Her short black boots were smart, and because it was only February, even though the sun was shining, she wrapped herself in a smart pillar box red coat.

The brightness of the colours she wore matched her spirit, she had reached an age she felt where she could wear whatever she wanted to, she didn't have to worry about what was current in fashion. She was going to see the love of her life, the man she cared about above all others, it was Valentine's Day, and wearing red was the most obvious thing to do.

Harry loved Chocolates

She got on the bus, carefully making sure she held the folds of her skirt up, it would be most embarrassing if she tripped over. In her other hand she held the gift bag containing his favourite chocolates, and also her bus pass, which she showed to the driver, and he nodded her through.

Mary sat straight backed in her seat, looking out of the window, everyone seemed to be in a hurry, and didn't they know it was Valentine's day? No-one was smiling, but maybe they were not as lucky as her, he would be there waiting for her, and a warm glow of love went through her at the thought of it.

So many young people nowadays got married and divorced in a blink of an eyelid, not so Mary, there had only ever been one man for her, the father of her children, and she had taken him " For better or Worse." all those years ago, and over the years her love for him had grown even stronger.

She arrived at her Destination

For all of her life, Mary had been an eternal optimist. When life had been challenging, she had always tried to minimise any pain and heartbreak, to be strong, and put it behind herself. She could still feel the pain of when she had given birth to their still born son, all these years later.

Thank goodness they had been blessed with another son and a daughter, of whom she was so proud . In fact when Jamie found out she had taken the bus to the hospital instead of asking him to take her, he would tell her off. But today Mary wanted Harry all to herself, it was their own special day.

She made her way into the hospital with all the other visitors, walking down the long corridor to where she would find him. She squashed down any feelings of apprehension, anxiety that he might not be all right, all she could focus on was that she was going to see her love.

His bed was Empty

Mary's smile died on her lips when she found his bed, it was empty, and he was not sitting in the chair next to it either, it was as though he had never been there at all. Her hands feverishly opened the locker, thank God, his clothes were still in there. But then despair welled up inside her, something had happened, and she didn't want to think the worst. Life without Harry was unimaginable!

The nurse came bustling in.
" Harry is in the day room, but now you are here, he will want to come back and see you."

Relief flooded through Mary, he was ok, in fact he was good if he was out of bed.
"Oh I want to see him too." she said with feeling.
" Doctor saw him this morning, and he has some news for you. I will let Harry tell you himself."

The curtains parted and Harry came in, he was dressed very smartly, and she felt those prickles deep inside at the sight of her handsome husband.
" Mary, happy Valentine's Day, guess what I can come home."

Nurse Jenny watched the dear old couple embracing with tears in her eyes. Mary must be 80 at least, and Harry was even older. That stroke had set him back, but now he was walking again, eating well, and fit enough to go home. She had seen the joy in his face every time his wife had come in, and her love for him shone in her eyes.

" How wonderful, you can eat these chocolates at home then!"

Mary's happiness was complete. She picked up her mobile to ring Jamie. She didn't mind how much he scolded her. Harry was coming home, , she wouldn't mind when he forgot to take off his muddy shoes, or clear up his clothes, the most important thing was she still had him, her ever lasting love would go on.

Oh Loverme you are welcome to share it. I believe that love is not just for the young, it can be strong at any age, especially with those who have spent so many years together. Enjoy your grandchildren, they grow up in a flash.
