Mona and Felipe are in Harbour Duffett for the grade ten exams. Mona and Ada are once again sharing a room while Felipe is given a room with two new boys.

New Roommates

Mrs. Ball smiled and hugged both Mona and Felipe when they arrived at her house in Harbour Duffett. Although she did not mention Andrew, both knew that he was in her thoughts – after all the three had been almost inseparable the previous year. Mona was delighted to learn that she would again be sharing a room with her good friend Ada from last year. Felipe was not surprised however, when Mrs. Ball led him to the opposite side of the house from where he had slept last year, thinking perhaps that he would not like seeing the room he had shared with Andrew. Her knock was answered by two boys who Felipe had not met before. She introduced them as Clyde Jones and Isaac Peddle. As Felipe unpacked his few possessions, he learned that both boys were from Pollard’s Cove, had been best friends since grade four and were now writing the grade nine exams. He noted too that both were slim in built and were slightly taller than him. Felipe soon excused himself and went to check on Mona. He realized later that his roommates had not been expecting him to return as quickly as he did for the two were wrestling on the bed and jumped up immediately when he opened the door. Although both tried to hide the bulges in their pants by quickly turning away, it did not miss Felipe’s quick eye. He showed no sign that anything was amiss however, and both boys soon relaxed. Half an hour later they went down to the kitchen where they enjoyed a delicious Jiggs Dinner.

Getting Aquainted.

When supper was over Felipe introduced Mona and Ada, and asked the boys if they would like to see the school where they would be writing the exams. Isaac and Clyde agreed and soon all five were walking the road toward the school. Just as the others had last year the two newcomers expressed awe at the size of the school and the community itself! The first exam was at 9AM the following morning with the grade nine class being tested in English Language and the grade ten in Math. Felipe no longer feared the Math exam but felt confident that he would have no trouble. This did not mean however, that he would not study when they returned to the house. Back in the bedroom, the bed was just wide enough for all three to lie on as they reviewed the year’s work and thought of the two hour exam which would have the final say as to whether they passed or failed. Felipe was mindful of what his teacher had told him about not cramming too hard and laid down his book after an hour. He also told his roommates of Mr. Smith’s advice and both decided that perhaps they too should relax for the remainder of the evening. Lying together on the bed Clyde and Isaac told Felipe about Pollard’s Cove and how this was their first time away from home. The fact was there was almost no difference in any of the communities along the shore. Some had twenty families, others twenty-five or thirty and whether the school had one teacher or two depended upon the number of children attending. At ten o’clock, they went downstairs for the regular cup of tea and some of Mrs. Ball’s yummy molasses buns. The three boys went to the outhouse before returning to their room and to bed. There Isaac and Clyde were happy to use the empty 2- holer while Felipe waited for one of the others to become vacant.

Sleeping Accomadations.

Back in their room it was decided that Clyde would sleep in the middle while Felipe and Isaac took either side. Felipe had accepted himself for who he was and undressing in front of the others no longer bothered him. His two roommates seemed pleased when Felipe took the initiative and casually undressed and got in bed. Clyde and Isaac were not shy in getting undressed in front of each other and they too were soon under the sheets. Felipe had not forgotten what he had seen earlier today and thought it might be fun to pretend to go to sleep quickly in case the two friends wanted to have a little fun with each other before going to sleep. He would never let them know about it of course, but he was not above enjoying himself as he pretended to sleep. Who knows what he might hear? He closed and eyes and his breath took on a steady rhythm.

Yes, well done my friend. I liked the ending's being left to speculative imagination.
