Felipe and Mona's thoughts turn to the fact that this may be their last year in Southern Arm.

Return to Southern Arm.

Felipe and Mona returned home on Saturday both thinking of how the following year would be their final year of school, and perhaps their last in Southern Arm. Neither of them spoke of it however, and such thoughts were soon forgotten as their parents questioned them about the exams. The teacher too was anxious to hear their thoughts on the finals and of course Anthony was happy to see them, especially Felipe of whom he asked many questions. The elder boy decided not to tell his friend of his suspicions about Isaac and Clyde as he felt sure that Anthony would not understand such love. Anthony thought of the relationship between him and Felipe as that of good friends and their horseplay as the norm among young men who had not yet attempted a relationship with one of the opposite sex. He had already developed an interest in girls but was far too shy to do anything about it. When among other boys his age he noticed that most of their talk was about girls but embarrassing other boys and perhaps fooling around with a best friend was about as far as things went with any of them. That Felipe showed no interest in talking about girls, he put down to his friend's respect for women and his belief that most girls remained virgins until they were married.

A Warm Summer

Giant icebergs could still be seen when one ventured outside the harbour and even within Southern Arm itself, there were still patches of slob ice. Consequently, though there were sunny days, the temperature on Newfoundland's Great Northern peninsula had yet to make it to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The southern part of the island in the meantime, was basking in temperatures in the low to mid 60's. While most parents were adamant that their offspring stay out of the water until 'dog days', which began on July 15th, many children driven perhaps by boredom were swimming at least ten days earlier when at last there was no more ice to be seen in the harbour. Anthony who had no intention of going back to the pond where he had been humiliated the previous summer spend most of his time with Felipe, who soon suggested that they spy on the others without revealing the fact that he had done such a thing before. Anthony thought it would be great fun but admitted to being scared of what might happen if they got caught. At seventeen, he knew that Felipe could easily outrun any of the boys but that the same could not be said for him. After swearing Anthony to secrecy, and promising him all the juicy details, Felipe began the first what he expected to be many such trips to the pond that summer.

Felipe's Final Summer in Southern Arm.

The days of summer slipped by and despite the cold weather experienced in June, unusually high temperatures in July and August made it one of the warmest summers on record. Anthony spent most of his time at Felipe's house, going home only to eat, sleep maybe one or two nights out of a week, and do a few chores. Since the boys were happy so were the parents. Benjamin and Delilah often smiled when they heard them go into gales of laughter and on only two occasions had to ask them to keep the noise down. Once when they were wrestling Delilah had warned that if they broke the bed they would be sleeping on the floor for the next six months. The warm weather meant more swimming time for the teenagers and more for Felipe and Anthony to whisper and laugh about at night. Most boys who had been humiliated did not stay away from the pond, as Anthony had done but returned hell-bent on revenge or at least determined to have the same thing (or something even more embarrassing) happen to another! This added to the fun for Felipe who looked forward to what form that revenge might take. Soon however, summer was over and he wondered if he had taken the last of such trips to the pond. In a few days he would be returning to school to complete his final year. He talked about it with Mona and both agreed that this year would be different from all others.

One last year of Schooling.

It had been many years since Mr. Smith had taught a grade eleven class and he admitted to doing some studying himself before the opening of school. Determined to make the most of their last school year, Mona and Felipe immediately returned to being bookworms. Anthony too, now in grade 8 and determined to follow in his friend's footsteps also buried himself in his studies. Now that another school year had begun the two boys only got together on Saturday nights, although they saw each other at school. Mona and Felipe studied together every night, sometimes at Mona’s house, and other times at Felipe's. It made no difference now as both were equally relaxed at either place. The first snowstorm came in late October and lasted three days leaving the old men shaking their heads amid predictions of "a real old time winter". Indeed the winter of 1954-55 as if not to be outdone by the previous summer, proved to be another record breaker. Paths were shovelled by hand by the men and boys and sliding became the favourite pastime of the youth on both moonlit nights and weekends. Though a few children had slides purchased from Eaton's catalogue, most were homemade. There was also the sleigh made from the remains of old barrels. Felipe even learned to dance the square dance and the reels at the 'times' that Christmas and came to understand how much the local populous appreciated this break from their usual humdrum life.
