Many people write on different subjects when it comes to poetry and are very comfortable doing so. Other people have to feel connected with the poems they write otherwise the poem sound awkward and meaningless.

Finding Your Path

When I was in an English class in high school our teacher wanted us to write a poem and the poem could be on whatever we wanted it to be on. All my classmates were writing frantically to show the teacher that they knew how to write poetry. I sat there and had no idea what to write. I looked at the walls, I looked at my classmates and I could not think of a thing to write about. Nothing made any sense to me. I would think of a word or two, but had no idea how to put the words that I had thought of into a poem.
Finally our teacher asked several students to share what they had written and many of the poems were very good. I was absolutely amazed at how well my classmates had done with writing the poems. I began to wonder what was wrong with me and wondered if I just was not a sensitive person.
As years passed by I kept remembering that day in school and having so much trouble writing a poem it was a long time before I tried to write poetry again. I kept reading advice about how to write poetry and the one thing that stuck in my mind was that I had to find what my passion was. After I thought about it for awhile I knew exactly what my passions were. My favorite holiday is Christmas and there are so many different aspects to the Christmas season. One can write about the singing of the carols, reindeer, Santa, elves, colors, Christmas trees, presents, snow, ice, family, decorations and so much more. I also enjoy chocolate, cookies, candy and nature.
Once I found my passion and felt the connection with the subject that I was using to write my poetry, everything just seemed to fall right into place without me having to struggle at all. I also understand that a person needs to go outside their comfort box and take a risk of writing different types of poems in order to learn and expand on their knowledge.

You feel like writing a poem when something kindles you emotions and imagination.

That is so true, if I do not feel connected to the poetry I am writing it does not come together. Thank you
