"My ninth birthday is next Sunday," Tavros chirped, his voice lost to all but Gamzee's ears as the chatter grew on the school bus. They sat in the very back seat together, relatively secluded as the morning light struggled to break through the rain-sodden clouds and fogging up the windows that the young commuters drew on with tiny fingers. Turning, Gamzee caught sight of his seatmate with a reassuring smile.

First, Last, and Forever

"My ninth birthday is next Sunday," Tavros chirped, his voice lost to all but Gamzee's ears as the chatter grew on the school bus. They sat in the very back seat together, relatively secluded as the morning light struggled to break through the rain-sodden clouds and fogging up the windows that the young commuters drew on with tiny fingers. Turning, Gamzee caught sight of his seatmate with a reassuring smile. Blushing under the gaze, Tavros picked at non-existent lint on his beige cargo pants, grinning despite his shy demeanor. This only served to make Gamzee's smile grow.

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain
Suddenly everything changed
They're spreadin' blankets on the beach

Gamzee nodded, scooting closer. "I know, Tavvie, I even got you something this year." The news made the younger boy blush softly, flustered. "Y-you didn't have to, Zee!" he rushed to state, "I-I just like h-having you over, that's all I n-need!" Gamzee chuckled softly at Tavros' stuttering voice, his tapered fingers reaching out over the fake leathery pattern of the seat and curling around Tavros' hand. "I want to, Tav," he whispered gently, leaning his forehead against Tavros' and causing a blaze of red across the bridge of the young boy's nose. Tavros' chocolate eyes crossed slightly to focus on Gamzee's face. Sweet milk chocolate, Gamzee thought idly, not bittersweet, because there was not a hint of bitterness in this boy's body.

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
I don't know where I am
I don't know where I've been
But I know where I want to go

The rumble of the bus engine nearly drowned out Gamzee's next words. "It makes me happy, seeing you happy." Their joined hands between them tightened as Gamzee ran a hesitant thumb over Tavros' knuckles, shy and smitten. "When I'm famous in a band, I'll get you all kinds of presents," he promised softly. Tavros giggled, his straining eyes closing. "Being famous doesn't mean anything to m-me, Gamzee...just as long as you're with me, I'll have all I need." There was a pause as Tavros calmed and Gamzee took in his young beauty, indigo eyes slipping shut as well so he could lean in and kiss those supple lips, causing Tavros' feet to swing slowly in excitement.

So I thought I'd let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow

Pulling away, Gamzee smiled softly, his hand running through Tavros' down-like hair, the moonlight bathing the younger man's sleepy face and the pillow he cradled under his head. His chocolate eyes were sparking with nocturnal lights all their own as Gamzee rested a hand on Tavros' thigh, stilling what remained of his legs under the sheets, stilling their excitement. "You never finished," Tavros whispered, his voice echoing faintly off the dorm walls. "Please...? Until I sleep...?" Never one to refuse, Gamzee nodded and adjusted the guitar in his lap as he sat cross-legged on the bed and began to strum again.

"But I realized that I need you," he sang softly against the darkness, his eyes focused on his lover. "And I wondered if I could come home..."

I remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning

The kiss left both of them blushing and caressing their own lips with their free hands, eyes bright and bewildered at the shock of innocent passion. The entire world remained unaware, the other children still babbling amongst themselves and the bus driver growing as irate as ever. Tavros' hand fell away from his flushed lips, leaning in once again and capturing an all-too-willing Gamzee in a second chaste kiss that left the younger nearly in tears as he giggled, conflicting emotions fighting for control.

And I thought it was strange
You said everything changed
You felt as if you just woke up

Gamzee smiled down at him softly, his own blush fading as Tavros hid his face in the older boy's chest. A beat or two passed like that until the bus came to a stop and another child boarded, taking a seat somewhere up front. Tavros them pulled back with a large happy grin, a common sight on him when Gamzee was present. Their hands, still clasped together between them, drew both their attention as silent realization reached them. Gamzee suddenly reached past Tavros, placing a tapered finger on the window and beginning to draw in the moisture as the rain pattered outside.

And you said,
This is the first day of my life,
I'm glad I didn't die before I met you

Turning to look, Tavros saw a large heart-shape dripping with excess condensation. Gamzee carefully wrote his initials into the lower-right corner of it, smiling at Tavros expectantly as he finished. In turn, Tavros rubbed his own initials onto the upper-left corner, looking at the finished product gleefully as Gamzee's hand over his became increasingly apparent.

But now I don't care I could go anywhere with you
And I'd probably be happy

"So if you wanna be with me," Gamzee sang softly, just audible enough to be heard over the guitar, "...with these things there's no telling; We'll just have to wait and see." Tavros smiled weakly from his place on the mattress, a tired hand inching closer as he fought to stay awake, to hear his song until the end. "But I'd rather be working for a paycheck than waiting to win the lottery..." He found himself humming to the soft chords he strummed, watching Tavros. "Besides maybe this time it's different,
I mean, I really think you like me..."

Gamzee's fingers stilled on the strings, the silence becoming eerie, all but Tavros' soft breathing. He set the guitar aside on the floor with a muffled thump, crawling over the mattress to spoon Tavros' body before his own. The quiet reigned, strong and dominate until Gamzee finally reached sleep.
