Forgotten Field

As usual I go on my morning walk and meander through woods, hedgerows and fields in summertime.

Woods

In the dampness of a an early summer morning I could smell wet peat and rotting bark that had fallen from some older trees,
I moved an old grey log laying in leaf mould, there were hundreds of creepy crawlies scurrying, doing what creepy crawlies do,
Thick green leaves on trees blocked out most of the light and it’s hard to believe there was a new sun rising from the east.
But you could see brightness in the distance, most of it hidden by great trunks of trees but when you looked hard, there it was.

Sparrow Hawk

Walking towards the light I came to the edge of the woods and a hedgerow separated me from a field that had been left to fend for itself, forgotten,
A hundred birds sang their songs from hawthorn branches protected by deadly thorns away from a hovering sparrow hawk.
Red berries hung in clusters and now and again a bird would stop singing and peck the fruit chewing it down to the pip.
As each bird chewed in prickly branches their eyes stared all around and their heads swiveled as the sparrow hawk passed over.

Hedgerows

I stood on the other side of these bushes on a hard worn path of mud and stones, a track formed by old wooden wagons and tractors,
And thought of a time when this hedgerow was a hive of activity, bodgers turning wood into chair legs and weaving baskets of twigs,
Wild flowers had taken the field over, people call them weeds they’re not weeds, just beautiful flowers in the wrong place,
So a morning scene was set, a dark mysterious wood behind me and a field of colour stretching into an unspoiled distance.

Forgotten Field

As usual I sat down and got a red apple from my windcheater pocket, for some reason it’s always wrapped in a handkerchief,
Smaller birds swooped into the wetter grass catching a dragonfly or a gnat then swooping up again high into a blue morning sky,
And again, as usual early sun caught dew drops on poppy petals and made them sparkle, enhancing an already beautiful flower,
Then I think to myself, how can this be a forgotten field, it’s only people that forget them not the things of nature, the thing that really matters.
