A story of survival and triumph in the field of basketball.

Gilas made it to the finals

August 10, 2013 has been a remarkable date for the Philippine Basketball history. Amidst their injuries and worn out muscles, Gilas Pilipinas team members were able to defeat Korea with the score of 86-79 qualifying them to the World Cup comes next year in Spain. Who wouldn’t be ecstatic about that? It has been decades since the Philippines last joined the FIBA World Cup,man!
The game was such a breath taking scene to witness whether on television, desktop, laptop and most especially live on the Mall of Asia Arena. MOA was filled with supportive fans of different walks of life shouting at the top of their lungs. For every point Gilas’ make, expect to hear the loud cheers of the Filipinos. And when the last minute came when Marc Pingris was still able to shoot the ball before the timer hits 00:00, loud shrieks echoed for the attained victory Gilas achieved beating the opponent with a seven-point lead at the end of the game. Emotions were outpouring and tears of joy were evident in the eyes of the Gilas Pilipinas team.It was indeed a great day for the Filipinos!

Battle of the fittest

Marc Pingris brought me to the game. I really am not a huge fan of basketball and I am not well-versed with its terms and conditions. Yet my admiration for this Pinoy Sakuragi and his wife Danica Sotto (who are both Christians) made me watch the momentous play of all time in Philippine history and it was all worth it.
Thirty minutes before the final game, I and my brother were all set to watch. While eating our dinner, our eyes were glued to the screen. We stood up when the National Anthem of the Philippines was played. Few minutes later, the game had already started and I cannot help but feel excited and nervous at the same time. Together with the fans watching in the MOA Arena which includes celebrities, politicians, high ranking officials including the president himself, other famous personalities and ordinary citizens who never failed to show their support, I was one of those who were screaming and cheering as if the players would hear me.
The final game was heart stopping that you wouldn’t even want to blink. Despite the huge Iran players especially Haddadi, Gilas Pilipinas played a nice game. The first half quarter has been unpredictable and it was amazing that Iran was only a point lead ahead of Gilas pilipinas. On the remaining quarters, Iran still took the lead a bit far than the score of Phils yet I was still hopeful even at the last minute. I uttered a prayer for every attempt of Smart Gilas to shoot the ball in the ring but the ball wouldn’t enter often times. The crown must have been predestined to be in the arms of Iranians for the third time around. Nevertheless, Gilas did put up a good fight and we Filipinos are so proud of them, so much!

Facing the giants

Giants, that’s how Filipinos describe these basketball players because their towering heights are far from how average Filipinos stand. But these giants were fated to face much bigger and taller hulks of the Middle East last Aug 11, a day after winning the match against Korea.Gilas were aware of that and Pinoys were quite in doubt of the possibility of winning the finals for obvious reasons especially when Haddadi came into action. Speaking of Haddadi, man, that giant really nailed it! But the best thing about the Gilas is that they were never afraid to face the giants. In fact, they were so aggressive and determined. The desire to win for the Phils push them through. They played with their hearts and souls aiming to give the country the honour and dedicated the victory to the motherland. Though they were defeated, still, for me they are champions! It is not the score that matters but the way they put up a good fight despite the injuries and physical struggles plus the size inferiority and lacking members.
As I watch these small giants play, I cannot help but compare them to the little David. He fought by faith and by heart. He was never wary of Goliath’s size. He was determined in facing the giant for his aim was to fight for his land and he succeeded.
Gilas Pilipinas fought for the country. “Patayan kung patayan!”Just like King David, they were able to achieve the goal of reaching the victory. The giant challenge was defeating other teams to be qualified in the WorldCup which they were able to fulfill. They were able to play with the giant players and survived the giant challenge.
I strongly believe that Gilas were able to make history because of their faith and because of God’s grace. For almost three decades it was elusive for Filipinos in making it to the Finals but this year God had answered our prayers and gave us the victory. That was more than enough blessing we should be thankful of.

Let the game begin

Some fans were saddened by the lost, others even bash Haddadi by posting rude comments in his official Facebook account. I believe it’s a dirty move from our countrymen. It was never Haddadi’s fault to be born that way. He is fortunate to have a height like that. Being bitter would never help and would never change anything anyway. Instead of putting the blame to the poor man, let’s all be positive here. What matters most is that we were qualified to join and play in the 2014 FIBA WorldCup.
Learn a lesson from the Gilas Pilipinas members. Play life with heart, fight for our country and make history. Set goals and be determined to fulfil it. Do not be afraid to face giants---person, situation, challenge or trial--because a greater Giant up in Heaven is backing us up. By faith we could reach our dreams. To God nothing is impossible.
Let us all pray as early as now for the victory of Gilas in the forthcoming 2014 FIBA WorldCup.See you all Gilas Pilipinas in Spain and let the game begin!!!#Puso!
Congratulations Gilas Pilipinas!
