Grandma’s Gloves and Other Memories of My Grandparents

Grandparents often play a major part in the lives of their grandchildren. They had a great impact on my life.

Grandparents Day is Celebrated in September

Grandparents are such an integral part of the extended family. Many are finding themselves as the primary caretakers of their grandchildren for various reasons. Thank God for them.

I was blessed to know my paternal grandparents. I honor them this month because it is National Grandparents Day on September 7.

Their Home

As a child I remember going to visit them in New Jersey. We would always receive a warm hug and a cheek-full of kisses from Grandma. Pop Pop, our grandfather was more reserved but loved us nonetheless. Sitting on his lap was always a special treat for me.

In their small kitchen was a wall hanging that said, "God Bless our Mortgaged Home". When we moved into our new home I was excited to display that same plaque in my kitchen.

It stirs up fond memories of seeing my grandmother cooking for her family. She found no greater joy than feeding us. And she believed in giving you a full plate of food. I remember many turkeys being carved on her special platters. When she passed away her granddaughters each received one. Her love of food also came out when she wrote a book of poems in which food was the main topic. I recited one of them at her funeral service.

Pop Pop and the New York Yankees

My grandfather was the ultimate New York Yankee's #1 fan. He spent many days sitting in his recliner watching their games on TV. He enjoyed keeping his car in tip top condition and barbecuing outdoors with his apron and chef's hat.

50th Wedding Anniversary

My grandparents were respected in their community. It seemed like the whole town came to their 50th wedding anniversary celebration where they renewed their vows. They were dubbed the "Best Dressed Couple" in their city. Grandma would wear her fancy gloves, hats and shoes while Pop Pop looked like a modern day model from GQ magazine.

They were very active in their church. While work wasn't always easy to come by, they did what they could to make ends meet. That same work ethic was instilled in my father. He in turn passed it down to us as his children.

Sweet Memories

Sometimes I find myself strolling down memory lane thinking about the good times that we were blessed to share with them as their grandchildren.

Grandma and Pop Pop your legacy continues. Thanks for the sweet memories. You are always close to my heart and sorely missed. Your spirit still lives
