Grow Locally, Buy Locally, Spend Locally - You Just may Save the Planet

As the cost of living skyrockets with a precipitous rise in the cost of energy just around the corner, we are going to have to do everything possible to create new ways of sustaining ourselves.

Enter the farmer's market

Take a look at the food on your dinner plate tonight. If you purchased the food in front of you at the local supermarket, the average distance from you to where that food originated is 1500 miles. The energy it took to produce it and transport it to you was twenty-five times the amount of energy it would have consumed if it had been produced in your locality. There's at least a partial solution to this, however. Farmer's markets have spread nearly everywhere. Local farmers produce locally grown nutrtious, often organic foods that are far tastier and healthier than the agribusiness foods in the produce sections of the supermarket chains.

Building community

The more we can stay away from the Walmarts of the world and support our local communities by buying locally whenever we can, the more we will strengthen them. We can band together in our communities to share our talents and abilities for each other. I believe that very soon events are going to force us in this direction, and we need to lay the groundwork now to begin to make our local communities self-sufficient and self-sustaining. Community gardens would be a wonderful place to start. When everyone pitches in together what results is a collective spirit that says "Yes, we can!"

The way of the present is not the way of the future

We cannot continue to live the way we are living. As more and more wealth moves from the lower and middle classes to those very few at the top of the economic ladder, the end result is that there will at some point soon be no money left in the hands of the overwhelming majority of the world's population, and then even the uber-rich will be in a grand pickle of their own making.

The collapse of the system is imminent. You don't hear about it in the corporate owned media, but more and more people are waking up and sensing something is up, some great and wrenching change is in the offing. It is time for us to gather at the local level to create a new paradigm for living, a paradigm that honors every human as an equal, that honors the earth that is our mother, that seeks to cooperate, not compete, to live in peace, and never again to make war. It can be done. It must be done.

When the system collapses the communities will also need to organize a defence force to keep gangs of plunderers from stealing the food. And then we will be right back at where we started. Competition and wars between communities. And then "strong leaders" will appear and offer protection at the cost of a certain percentage of the food grown in the area, and after a while the area wont produce enough to feed all the people in the area, and they will have to do something else, maybe build ships and plunder similar areas along the coastlines of other places... The only way to avoid this typical human development is that EVERY individual evolves his mind up to the next level, and is absolutely sure that others do not represent a threat, but only opportunity and cooperation for the better of the whole human race. How to get to that point of collective consciousness is a question I dont think anyone can answer..
Nice share, thank you.

It may be that the sun's alignment with the galactic center in 2012 will correlate to a quantum shift or leap in the collective consciousness. I cannot believe that humanity came on this journey in order to blow it. Thanks for your insightful comment, Jonathan.

I agree with you JAridley - if we aren't on an evolutionary road, what's the purpose? Thannks for commenting.

These are things we all need to start thinking about. Our very survival depend on it. Thank you, Steve!
