Happiness is a state of mind, and it doesn't come with swanky cars, luxurious homes or wealth. It comes from within.

About myself.

I am immensely pleased with myself because I had used my time on this Earth so far wisely and lived a happy life. I might not have achieved my ambitions and goals, won laurels and accolades, accumulated wealth or become famous and influential, but I had lived a happy life. I might have lost out on several things, but I had gained in happiness. I thought I would share my ideas with my readers.

Simple pleasures of life.

Happiness does not come in swanky expensive cars, Rolex watches or the most spacious and luxurious sea facing villas. It comes in small bursts of joy when we learn to savor the ordinary pleasures life offers us- like those times when I see a flight of birds in the light blue sky and life feel so happy. When someone praises my acts or appreciates my humor, writing, books or a blog, my heart jumps with joy.

When I hear my favorite song on the radio and start singing along and break into a dance merrily in my room involuntarily, or when a dish prepared by my wife tastes just like the one my mom used to make when I was a kid, it is happiness unbound for me.

These “happy” moments did not come not too often, but whenever they came, they satisfied and made my life happier than other occasions. I always enjoyed the ordinary pleasures like a walk in the park, a sailboat ride or a lick of an ice cream. I had some constantly troubling medical problems but also some talent appreciated by my friends and associates. I cried silently when I couldn’t endure the pain, but I made it a point to discover, recognize and savor the natural pleasures granted to me and count my blessings every day.

Complaint free life.

I am focused on learning, recognizing everyday blessings and finding something positive in every person I meet. I never had time to notice negativity or dwell on problems that are probably nonexistent. I had concentrated on what suited me and spent my time pursuing my interest.

For those who do not believe me, I suggest they try out a little experiment to go one whole day without complaining about anything or anyone. I am positive they will see the world in a different light. It is like looking at it through a different prism. There is an amazing, colorful world outside if only we prefer to see.

Gratitude or appreciation.

During my service, I had helped several people in whatever way I could help them, but I never expected any gratitude from them. When I help –give a leg up or give some money to a needy soul, I help because it makes me feel virtuous and enjoy a kind deed done. “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.” To expect any gratitude and appreciation for the help I rendered would be pointless I thought. I remember a quote,”You have not lived a perfect day, even though you have earned your money, unless you have done something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”

Smile always.

Those who know me well must have always found me with a smile on my face and a touch of humor in my words. Although not born with a silver spoon, and had gone through trying circumstances, I managed to laugh whenever possible and see the humor even in difficult situations. I recommend to one and all to smile always. I know it is easier said than done, but it works. If you are one of those people, who always have a ready smile, you will appreciate what I am talking about. Smiling is one of the simplest gestures that create a deeper connection between people, giving them a reason to pass on the smile. If you find a person without a smile on his face, pass on yours. This has been my credo all my life and comes across clearly in my writing.

A sincere, heart-felt smile can instantly make one extremely happy and it can brighten someone else’s day too. A daily dose of laughter is the best medicine for robust health.

Laugh, laugh, the world laughs with you.
Weep, weep the world weeps with you,
For this world has troubles of its own
And this poor earth is in need of your mirth.

Faith in myself.

You may call it by any name- God, the Universe, or something supernatural, invisible thing that connects humanity. There is something that is greater than us. It is indefinable and hard to explain but cannot be denied. It is the thing which controls many things we don't understand. It's better to accept its presence than to be a control freak, or live under a grand delusion that we are always in control. So many things are beyond our control. Whenever something had happened to me, I always accepted it has happened for my good. We may not always know what is best for us.

Although not devout, I believe there is something in which one should have faith. Of course, I have immense faith in myself. I believe faith in something is essential, for without faith life would be confusing and a total mess.

Imperfection

There is no perfect man or woman. Even the full moon has some dark spots. If one is under the impression he is perfect or better than others around him, or his way of doing things is better than others' ways, he is suffering from delusions of grandeur. "My way or highway" is no way to think.

I strongly believe it is essential not to look down on people with some disability or people challenged in some ways. It is also essential to respect people who think differently from you.

Some people are acutely health-conscious, and some does not exercise or eat healthy food. Some are organized, and some live in a mess and clutter. Some are aesthete and take immense pains to look smart and elegant while others could not care less about their appearance. I try to look smart, but I do not look at others who are not smart with contempt or disdain.

I never forget most of us are always on a never ending learning curve. I Keep learning and improving something. The smallest inventions add up to make a space shuttle. When I learn something new, my feel good factor that day will shoot up. At the same time, I do not look with disdain at people who simply while away their time.

Leadership.

Due to some circumstances beyond my control, I could not be a leader or a leading figure. However, I have a few points for those aspiring to be leaders.

The best way to inspire or motivate another person is by leading from the front, by showing one’s outstanding qualities and by setting an example. Cease’s wife never commits sin. If one is lacking some qualities, he cannot inspire his teammates to display them. He needs to develop an empathy and understanding with people around him. Secondly, if he empowers and encourage others, he will find himself happier and more energetic. It will also help him achieve his goals. It's a virtuous circle – the more one gives and strives to help others improve their life, the more his own life improves.

I want to conclude this piece is not entirely a product of my wisdom. Nor do I claim to be a wise person. This is wisdom I garnered from different sources and through experience. If you see my profile, you will not fail to notice my gray hair in which each strand stands for some achievement or disappointment that taught me a lesson. FYI, I am stuck somewhere on the learning curve and do not know if and when I will reach the top. However, I always see a rainbow and a pot of gold on it.

Inspirational GVR and well explained. I have seen few rich chasing after pots of gold all their life only to realize later that others are waiting to snatch them before their time! Even own family treat them only as robots busy printing money! siva

A whole lot of wisdom in this article. I was watching the Oprah talk show about 20 years ago and Oprah had the poet Maya Angelou on. Maya said one thing that has stuck with me ever since and that is...
No matter what your child has done, it be good or bad, smile when they enter the room. This makes for a confident and secure child. I am sure that could pertain to adults also. A heartfelt and awe inspiring article. Well deserving of the star. Thank you for sharing.:)
