An essay about, "Hands up, don't shoot!" and the recent attempted assassination of two police officers in Ferguson, Missouri.

"Hands up, don't shoot!"

"Hands up, don't shoot!" Is the mantra of protesters decrying police violence. They are still protesting the shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. According to some eyewitnesses Mike Brown had his hands up in surrender and his back turned to Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson when Wilson shot and killed him. That scenario has now been proven to be a lie. Had Mike Brown done as those eyewitnesses claim he would probably be alive today.

Never convince otherwise

But, the protests continue. Along with the Ferguson protesters, protesters nationwide are using this phrase while holding their hands in the air. We've seen it used by TV talk show hosts and their guests. At sporting events athletes are using it. Some politicians have been seen making that gesture. Many people believe that's what Mike Brown did. They will never be convinced otherwise.

Why are they still protesting?

Last week the protesters in Ferguson used it again. They were demanding resignations by the chief of police and other government officials in Ferguson. They got their wish! The police chief and several other people turned in their resignations. Even after that protests continued. Then at a protest on the night of the announcement of the resignations, shots rang out. Two police offices standing in front the Ferguson police station were shot by an assassin. They were there along with many other officers keeping an eye on the protesters who had gathered.
One officer was shot in the face and the other in the shoulder. Both survived and are now recuperating at home after treatment at a hospital. The officer who was shot in the face still has the bullet inside his body, lodged behind his ear. Three shots in all were heard. This is not the first time that the police have been shot at in Ferguson. The protesters were seen fighting each other and three were arrested. The shots came from a dark street across from the police station. A manhunt for the shooter is currently underway. Why are they still protesting when they've gotten what they demanded?

"Hands up or I'll shoot!'

The police never even had a chance to put up their hands and cry, "Don't shoot!" Had the cowardly assassin shown himself it's the police who would've been saying, "Hands up!" but, not followed by, "Don't shoot!" It would've been followed by, "or I'll shoot!"

It is unconscionable that these two officers were shot. But the chickens always come home to roost. Police shootings of unarmed black men has reached epidemic proportions. Violence begets violence. Too bad the cops haven't learned that lesson.
