Have you ever wondered why people choose a username on line and if it has great significance to them>

I often wonder about online usernames. Where did the names come from in the first place? Were they well thought out or simply made up at the spur of the moment? Is there any real meaning behind them?

For example, many bubblers know me as winterose from mylot. However winterose dates back much further than that. When I first started with the Internet I joined a MIRC chat group. It was then that I found out that I had to have a username. I didn’t know much about it and I thought that name had to be the name of the person paying the internet bill. So I was L. Clyke.

Can't pick a rose in December

That didn’t work out too well because everyone thought I was a man. So I changed it to destiny. That didn’t work any better because there were already too many destinies on MIRC and I would get messages about why I was being so nasty. It turns out it was one of the other destinies who was the one causing all the trouble. As soon as I figured that out I had to change my username yet again.

I wanted to be a rose, but as you can guess already, there were too many roses on MIRC as well. So I came to the conclusion that I would be winterose.

The first thing that might come to your attention is that winterose is missing an r. However, it wasn’t because I couldn’t spell; it was because I used the maximum letters I was allowed on that site so I dropped off the extra r.

Furthermore, Winterose had special meaning to me. My grandmother used to rock me to sleep at night when I was a baby. She did that until I was five-years-old. Her favorite song was “La Vie en Rose.” I can still remember her singing it. Her second favorite song was, “You Can’t Pick a Rose in December.

Well, I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and of course we have winter and so the roses are not in bloom. Yet, there is one place in Canada where you can actually have roses blooming in early December and that is Victoria, British Columbia. Hence I choose my nick or username to be winterose.

How did you choose your username?

How did you choose your username?

Do you have a favorite username owned by someone else? I have been on the net now for a very long time, and the name I love the most actually belongs to another bubbler. I think "lovingmybabies" is about the most beautiful username I have ever seen. It warms my heart every time I see it. The lady known as @lovingmybabies is pretty cool as well.

Interesting article Carol.

A lot of user names are already taken, and it often takes a bit of creativity to come up with a good new one not used before.

This is an interesting question. Much of my on-line presence dated back to on-line bulletin boards that we used professionally as long ago as 1979 when using the web. We had some strange names even back then, but I have always used "pgiblett" because I wanted to sound real and professional.

Great article, Carol! My old usernames came from my favorite superheroes and combining my name with a celebrity's name!
