Travelling just for the love of art! We traveled for 6 hour drive to fill a dream of mine. Many years late I was able to do this.

Have you heard about The Group of Seven?

When I was in grade 6 my school had a trip to McMichael Art Gallery
At this time was fairly new in Canada I also did not speak English. Communication was very hard for me. I recall the form that I had to bring home to be signed for approval. My parent also did not speak English so I knew this was going to be an issue and I wanted to go so bad.
At this point my parents were not very fund of my love for the arts; beading was okay but not art. I remember my father at dinner one night saying artist only become famous after death.
I told my brother about the trip and how I wanted to go but who wood sign for the form?
He says no problem I can do dad’s signature.
We were in different school so why not!
My teacher had a pamphlet about the gallery I was lost looking at it, when she passed it around for everyone to see. I took the longest holding it and looking at it. At this time I had no idea what abstract art was but I love it and I wanted to know more about.
On our trip there were 6 schools that were all invited to the gallery.
We saw a slid show that showed were these artists painted most of their items.
They showed this beautiful parked called Killarney. My goal now was to go there and make my own painting.

Found someone that I could speak with in another language.

What I did not know was that this park was not around the corner from where I lived. But I made a promise to myself that one day when I was all grown up I would go and walk on the foot prints of my heroes.
The best part of this trip was that after the gallery show and viewing the art, we were to go outside with a partner and look for tracks in the snow of the wild life.
We were all giving a map and a compass and on the map it show what track to look for.
I did not want to go out into the snow I come from a hot country snow was not my most favorite place to be.
My teacher tried to tell me to go anyways. It turns out that there was another boy from another school another school that had the same idea as I did. Let’s just stay inside and look at the art, but the show was now over.
I got pair up with him the two lost children. Every one thought we were shy, but we just did not speak English so communication was hard for me, I just listen trying to figure out what they were saying.
So off we went outside in the cold looking for tracks. My new friend also did not speak English. I was thinking great another communication problem.
So in very bad English I said to him. “Me Brazil”
He smiled this huge smile and he said. “Me Equator”
I started to laugh. that the poor kid was wondering what the heck was wrong with me.
My next sentence to him was in Spanish and we laughed together like we knew each other all of our lives.
We made a deal to find all of the tracks first and return to the lobby fast so we could get warm.
When we got back first, we had all of the tracks and all marked on our map with the location for our teachers to see.

A special gift from my husband a trip of a life time.

I told my husband this story about wanting to o to this park one day
In August 2003 I did go to Killarney I did walk in the foot prints of my heroes.
When we arrived in town which is only one very small street they told us me need a tent to stay there over night. It was still a bit of a drive from town. We arrived at sundown and I had to set up camp in the dark. The first thing was to get a small fire going so I could see.

Someone afraid of the dark in the forest.

I didn’t paint but I took many photos of the place that was very dear to me. My husband had never gone camping before and the wild places are not his thing. I told him I would take care of him in the wild.
This was the best trip of my fife and my husband did not sleep all night worried that some wild animal was going to eat him in his sleep. He also did not like to sleep in a tent.
Now he loves camping and we normally go very far to do so.

Foot notes; photo of the small town, photo of the rocks reflecting off the lake, if your turn your head to the side you can see totem poles. Photo of me setting up camp in the dark.
