Hide and seek; the way of our life, world!

We have to depend on us only to make the change for a better life, world. We have choices apleny when we refuse to follow the herd. We need to learn lessons as we travel along, find own balance for fulfilling life. The change has to come from each, within us. None else will hold our hand.

Our set ways

How much is enough? Agreed, that depends. We need limitless love and time for each other; and when we have both, our lives become sublime! Unlimited material hoards, transient pleasures bring us misery in the end. We will be just chasing mirages and soon come to grief, face harsh realities and even doom, not much unlike now!

We are running an endless race; at least, that is what we are led to believe. We pursue what is drilled into us and tough to go against the crowd; while in Rome, be like the Romans, is the clarion call, being amid others who are set on their ways, we hardly question and follow the herd.

Present reality

We face one roadblock after another and go around in circles. We look to others for guidance and that proves a big mistake because they are clueless. They lead us like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, a one way to ticket to ruin!

Do we have a choice? We think we don’t have, but we should slowly find our way. History is replete with episodes of those that led to strife and even worse. Hatred springs when there is injustice and intolerance. Love cannot be resisted and we reciprocate sooner than later. Add to that, compassion, live and let live, common identity, empathy, helping hand to those in need and the list goes on and on. They are the lubricants to a fulfilling life that we all look forward to.

We take life as a zero sum game; feel that one has to lose for another to gain. Yes, for material possessions, that applies. But when such attitude defines our lives, we are truly done for, we had it! They are never enough as when we get out of one circle, we find ourselves in another where we start at the bottom rung again! And when we enter the mad race, we regress without our realizing! We get into a vicious cycle from where the escape to sanity proves beyond us; we are already defined as a success in material terms and we have to play along till the music stops abruptly!

The world is in a frenzy to progress, but are we on the right path? We are part of a herd and facing stampede. We head for crocodile infested waters; cross we must, to stay ahead. Do we have time to rethink, reprioritize? Who calls the shots? The leaders are followers and hardly tell us the stumbling blocks strewn along the way. Why bother as they have own agenda – to finish their term and be done with it!

Up to each to make a difference

Hence, it all boils down to us! Are we not masters of our destiny? If what we encounter is not to our liking, then change course and face the music along the way. Why depend on others who have less urge to make the change? One door closes, but many are waiting to open. Make a choice than look for scapegoats for our predicaments.

Leadership is surely lacking but that means we have none to look up to except take a hard look at the mirror to figure out who has to make the change. None is going to hold our hands and that is what is intended from the beginning. We may be missed but soon forgotten. Now we have more avenues to forget anyone! Even in the animal kingdom, a mother puts her life at risk but there are limits; she has soon to move on. Male lions are out to kill others’ cubs and soon the mother gets over the pain. Being from an earlier school of thought and still believing firmly in such, I accept the reverses with equanimity. Let others have their ball, but I am still left with my life in tact; agreed bruised, but soon recovered with lessons learned.

One door shuts on our face and, lo and behold, another opens. I have been betrayed times over, but soon a better set of friends and colleagues walk-in with welcoming arms. They even act as a balm to relieve any lingering pain! They were biding their time when others held my attention. But when reality strikes, we find our true friends, realms, and equanimity.

These happen not only now. They are fact of life from time immemorial, applicable to other species too. Few have shown the way and one name comes to mind – Gautama Buddha. He realized life is mostly suffering and we have to find a way of life to transcend them to find meaning. We are selfish even though we know it is a harmful trait. But when that scores cheap victories, a stepping stone to a small hill we lose our focus. To attain balance, deeper meaning and tranquility in our lives, let the change come from within. We can change with little steps and let that start from us! Soon it will turn a flood and act as the catalyst for the rest!

Thanks Delicia, for your sage comments. We tend to find fault with others, but we forget the options we have to make a difference to our lives. My parents too lived a simple life and knew all along that they were only responsible for their destiny. I try to pass on and share what I have learned in my life. I see the young too eager to throw in the towel when the going gets tough and blame all and sundry. I have seen great wealth is a ruin when built on wrong foundations - siva

Your articles stir my heart and soul. It is as if you are writing what is in my heart. Yet, your words are so much more eloquent than mine will ever be. I see how the love of material things has ruined our nation and our families, especially the small children who are left in the wake and in so much need of love. We as a nation are too busy lusting after gadgets that we fail to see what is really important...our precious children!!!

Judy, my heart aches eveytime I see parents, especially moms, glued to their gadgets and ignoring their children who look up to them for attention and love. We negate the basics of life that way! I join you in your plaintive cry of anguish - siva

I love the way you don't just write it straight, but create visual images such as being part of a herd and facing stampede and heading for crocodile infested waters. Phrases like this bring your writing alive for me.
