Hospital Blues

I wrote this poem at a hospital while waiting with a sick friend. It really was a gloomy place to be that day.

Hospital Blues

Sitting on a wooden hospital bench
Waiting for a sick friend to be seen
Disgruntled patients pace to and fro
Wondering when they will be next
A sad gloom of sickness fills the air
Mingled with the stale perspiration
and lingering scents of disinfectant

I hear the low groans of those in pain
And it increases my glum discomfort
The thought of escaping for fresh air
Crosses my mind, but I cannot leave
I was in good health when I arrived
But the unpleasant atmosphere infects
Me with a giddy nauseating feeling

Nurses with trolleys briskly walk by
A doctor speaks to a worried mother
The staff seems to be constantly busy
But the waiting room is never empty
Time stands still in places like these
Yet precious hours are lost when we go
Leaving folks frustrated and exhausted

Contaminated with the hospital blues

I hope your friend feels better. I am not a fan of hospitals -- but I like it when I'm leaving them!!
