This is a poem about a hound (dog) on Inchkeith Island
Hound of Inchkeith (Boofie)
His master loved him from a pup
With a heavy heart he gave him up.
The Sanctuary became his home
No boarding kennel, but free to roam.
Like others before, he settled in well
Though what were his thoughts, no one can tell.
He'd known only one master for thirteen long years
His brown eyes were sad, but never shed tears.
He was loved and much wanted but no home could be found
Where master could live and be with his hound.
He had worked on the island; knew what was involved
So the future of Boofie was happily solved.
As time went on, strange things came to pass
Boofie patrolled his acres of grass.
His life should be easy; need never be hard
But he''s set himself up as the island's guard.
Whenever he can, he is there at his post
“Rarely off duty” could be his proud boast.
He stand on the high road; sees all around
His warning would shame the Baskerville hound.
Nothing escapes his eagle sharp eye
Be it ship on the sea or plane in the sky.
No doubt on a quiet night for some miles around
Some souls will be trembling on hearing his sound.
From his vantage point on high
He scans the sea, the land, the sky.
A brave villain he, who dares to land
While the island's guard is on command.
To those who visit bringing goodwill
Boofie will let you climb “his” hill.
On these occasions when he is baying
“You're welcoming here”, is what he is saying.
