How Far We Can Express of Our Freedom of Expression as Writers on Taboo Contents

Taboo contents are hot subjects that can attract people to read and invite search engine crawlers and spiders to hang on. But some people considered them not healthy subjects or topics to discuss. Should you still insist to write them?

Three young boys ages ten, eleven and twelve raped a 65 year old woman

Does the title disclose about taboo contents? The heading does not tell yet about the rape scene. However, if I described the rape scene exactly what has happened from the rapists' view point, the story would come as 100% taboo. It is said that taboo challenges one's free speech and individual rights to express a subject or issue in need to be addressed.

What is Taboo

Dictionary and Encyclopedia define Taboo as any of the negative traditions, objects, or behaviors generally regarded as harmful to social welfare or something that is forbidden by a society as unacceptable or improper. It is a strong social prohibition relating to any area of human activity or social custom that is sacred and forbidden based on moral judgment and religious beliefs. Breaking the taboo is usually considered ill-favored or offensive by society.

Taboo subjects that according to some experts should be avoided

The below are some taboo subjects to be avoided such as:

  • Rape - Until now there are people unhappy to read stories which feature a sexual assault or which has rape as a central theme especially when it is written from the rapist's viewpoint.

  • Prostitution - Anything that seems to glamorize prostitution will be frowned on and any story dealing with an underage prostitute may cause you headaches if you describe him/her in any sex act. It is illegal.

  • Under Age Sex - Any story that deals with children being treated as objects of desire or being forced into sex is out and should not be discussed.

  • Incest - Sexual relations between people classed as being too closely related to marry each other or about the crime of making-love with a parent, child, sibling, or grandchild.

  • Phone Sex Lines - They are also considered as taboo even though they are dealt with in a humorous way.

  • Promiscuity - The state or quality of being promiscuous. In human sexual behavior, it denotes sex with relatively many partners.

  • Fetishism - It deals about an object believed to have supernatural powers, or in particular, a man-made object that has power over others or the practice of using an inanimate object as the focus of sexual pleasure.

  • AIDS - This is also considered as taboo contents. Many people are still uncomfortable to read stories about the subject maybe because some people do not fully understand the condition and still scared by reading about it.

  • Stalking - Avoid advocating stalking or describing a man lustfully watching his prey undressing or telling the story in a manner through the eyes of the stalker.

  • Drugs - This is one of the big taboos. Whatever your own personal views - still many people are vehemently opposed to drug-taking in any form.

Additional taboo subjects that need your attention

  • Child Abuse - No matter how beautifully and meaningfully you wrote the story it is still regarded as taboo. Avoid having a story where an innocent friendship grows between a child and an older man or woman. It will be viewed with suspicion.

  • Unmarried Mothers - Avoid writing articles dealing with unmarried mothers. Some people still regarded them as forbidden subjects.

  • Living in Sin - This falls into the same category as unmarried mothers. Some people will still be unhappy about the thought of a couple cohabiting who are not legally wed.

  • Divorce - Some people are still uncomfortable to read stories about divorce or the split up a marriage.

  • The Disabled - This is also considered as taboo by some people.

  • Homosexuality - Avoid story describing homosexual love making. Many people still believed that this can cause grave offence.

  • Social Irresponsibility - This is also regarded as taboo especially if your story is telling about irresponsible and scandalous behavior of people.

  • Violence - This is another of the great taboos especially if against women. It is a big no.

  • Domestic Violence - Anything that describes domestic violence in any emotionally moving or disturbing way is likely to run into problems such as wife-beating, mysterious black eyes and girlfriends fleeing to refuges.

  • Poverty - Some people considered it as depressing. The truth hurts.

  • Old People - This is also considered as taboo.

  • Minority Groups - Avoid portraying members of minority groups.

  • Using Black as a Symbol of Evil or Depression - Some people claim that this has all sorts of sinister and racist connotations.

  • Criminals - People do not want criminals to benefit from their crimes. And there are people uncomfortable to read stories advocating criminals.

  • Swearing - This is one of the biggest taboos of all!

My personal opinion

I think we can still write those taboo topics provided that our intentions are to clear the issues and to protect the victims. Because if nobody will stand to discuss issues, crimes, violence and etc., I can see that the world will be full of mess and madness!

I think everything is anything goes for you and me. It's up to the authorities which shouldn't be shown. Censorship is relative. And what I say is relative as well. So who should rule universally? What was once taboo is no longer. Sin or what is right and wrong, including biblically, would you believe, changes with the times. Thanks, Kab.

Cheers for that kab Buzz. In some other parts of the world - there are still people who are conservative. And we cannot push to them what logic we have in mind...thanks.

My wife loves writing taboo or controversial items, I have mostly stopped because I do not like to engage in the negative debates that often follow. Its up to you, but if you do not want negative feed back or cannot handle negative feedback - stay away from such topics!

I agree with you Mark. Actually I found people who are not used to handle negative feedback. Some of them have stopped from writing. As for me it's just OK - I consider negative feedback helpful mechanism for self-improvement. Thanks for sharing your best say...

Maybe by writing about taboo subjects will mean they will no longer remain taboo. The majority of your list is what happens in our world so why not write about it.

As someone who has seen Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, Poverty in my real life the greatest crime that you commit is to leave a child to witness and suffer through the above things. Although going through poverty helps them understand how to survive with minimal income and how to use money and stretch that dollar to the maximum.
Divorce is not something bad, but the reason of the divorce is needed. If it for personal gain and adultery to join another lover it is condoned. But if it is to give life to the child and yourself because of the violence and abuse, I would say go for it and that is what I have done in my life. Not that I don't love my spouse, I do, but I love my child more to sacrifice my love to keep my child alive. After all he is the destiny and pillar of tomorrow.
With regard to rape, underage sex etc. I would recommend that people go to the police and report the same as it is a crime based on the law of the land and no matter what a child should be allowed to grow as a child and attain their maturity by learning and observing things around. If their parents are unfit, they should either give their children up for adoption or to relatives who love kids to bring them up.
Sorry Don't agree with all your points, as you are the master of your own destiny and no one is a sacrificial lamb. Although Abraham did try to sacrifice his son Isaac to show his faith in God and was rewarded with a real lamb and the baby(son) was spared. God never encourages anyone to stay back and suffer although he did say a woman should submit to her man it doesn't mean she should take his beating torture, control and dominance to kill herself. This was told to me by the Church itself last year when they took me to the cops to help save my child.

Yup - it is really beautiful dancing of the belly. And it is normal. The woman was really a good dancer. The movements of her belly speaks hundreds of beautiful languages. I love watching it.

What a nice idea you shared to me - if controversial subjects always attract comments - it means that more people are already accepted some of taboos subjects - only in other way. Thanks Ms.Carol.

Very interesting topic I often wonder about myself. The Internet has forced us to become sensitive to cultures on the other side of the planet that were not of concern a decade ago. There is no subject that is not offensive to someone, somewhere.

Most of the Terabytes of content on the Internet appears to be Taboo and the world is 'secretly' driven by it.

This was a wonderful, thought provoking article. I agree with you, ppruel, that it is important to write about many of these subjects. It helps to bring light to these issues and gives support to the victims. I loved the belly dancing video. Wow! Thanks for sharing..
