How do you publish your poems for money

I wanted to publish my poems desperately and had posted them at several websites but often the response was very poor from the readers.

I would like to share my experience of how stumbled upon Wikinut recently to publish my poems.

Why most people won't read poetry

My observation is that mostly people won't read poems on websites. There are very less percentage of population in the world who are interested in poetry. I experienced that even my family members and friends don't care what wonderful poetry I'm writing.

It is very rare to find a person who appreciates your creativity. Even if you convince a person that poetry is creative they won't heed your opinion about what you meant by poetic creativity.

Because people won't have much time to read through a poem and enjoy the imagination and message of the poet conveying them in abstract form. And the urge in you slowly dies if you stop writing poetry because you're discouraged to do so by the cold response you receive.

Why most readers won't comment on your poems

Many websites publish your poetry for free. And the volume is so much that the visitors don't often get inspired instantaneously to leave a comment in appreciation of your poems because of these four reasons.

Either
(1). The visitors need to register on that website to comment on the poems.

Or
(2) They must have ample time to read a poem and digest the meaning of it and think of a comment.

Moreover,
(3) Every visitor will not have an inclination to leave a trace of their ignorance about poetry when they comment as they may be thinking that it is waste of their valuable time writing comments.

Apart from the above,
(4). There could be many other reasons why people won't be attracted to poetry.

I tried my own poetry blog but not received even a single comment in three years. I wrote many good poems on my blog and applied for Google Adsense in view of getting paid for the advertisements Google inserts on the blogs . But Adsense did not accept my request telling that pure poetry won't sell as a blog on the web. They're right.

But I observed that most population enjoy music even if they don't understand what is being sung. Even if a song's lyrics are not reaching their ears and even if the meaning is not clear to them, they really enjoy songs with some beats that suit to their taste.

There are Websites that pay you for publishing your poetry

After going through many ordeals to publish my poetry, I came across few websites like Wikinut, Hubpages and Triond and where like-minded people post their poems and share their ideas commenting on others poems.

Why such websites promote your poems is that they insert advertisements from different promotional agencies to attract the visitors for business. And they pay you almost 50% to 60% of the revenue generated from the clicks the ads receive on your poetry pages.

And the co-authors on these websites have to comment on others' poems in order to receive good response from others. So there is a good atmosphere of mutual understanding created among the writers.

You can also post articles on any topic that you can write on. It is just like blogging and you can write anything and publish and get paid the royalties.

It's very difficult to show your work when your poems are not given their recognition.
Only a poem lover or another poet or a critic knows what is a poem and how it should be enjoyed.

Songs are poems and people like them when tuned to an appealing rhythm or otherwise not.

I'm happy that at Wikinut we're a group of like-minded people who share the ideas and mutually appreciate too.

Thanks, Songbird.

Jonathan,
That's the truth. Poetry won't sell much.
But I find sites like Wikinut are good for sharing our poems.

Excellent tips and observations. thanks for sharing your journey (AND YOUR POETRY) with us here on Wikinut. I agree with Jonathan, though it is nice at least that people read and enjoy the poems--that is also a form of reward.

You're right. Getting some appreciation is really a reward for a poet.

I'll confess that, as a rule, I don't read poetry on or offline. As for people reading poetry online, poetry isn't something that most people conduct online searches for.

Personally I would never question a poets creative writing skills. Poetry is probably the hardest genre to write in.

Jerry Walch,
Free verse gives a lot of freedom to a poet. So, I'm finding many people write poems as the emotions well up.

And I find many songsters spin much amazing poetry fused with the music they compose.

I write a lot of online poetry (most of it at another site) and I do receive quite a few comments from others, mostly fellow poets. I am beginning to publish more poetry here at Wikinut. Thanks for an outstanding article, and congrats on the star page!

Thanks Mike,
It is mostly fellow poets who would search for poems on the net and offer comments, though there are many who have passion to enjoy poems and hunt for the content of their interest.

Happy to read your wonderful remarks Debby, and I thank you for that.

It can be helpful to me and other writers, if you could post a page about tagging poems on Facebook .

Hope you'll be kind to do that soon.

This is a good article. I'm a poet too, but I haven't posted much poetry here yet, just the limerick that went with my article on writing limericks. I've posted some poetry on Triond too, but what I like doing most with my poetry is going to poetry readings and reading my poems to a live audience. Poetry has a special place in my heart and mind and I love connecting with poetry lovers.

Only once I happen to enjoy attending a poetry reading symposium.
Such symposiums mostly attract only poets and poetry fans.

Since I'm away from such environment, I'm enjoying posting my poems at Wikinut.

And there are quite a lot friends whose comments have been encouraging to me. And I get inspired by a simple remark on my poem.
I think every writer has a craving for appreciation in some way.

An excellent article, worthy of its star. It's true that a lot of people don't read poetry, i think, because they aren't sure how to take it. Many of us are put off it in school, where we are taught to dissect it like a frog, rather than the beautiful work of art that it truly is.
Keep up the wonderful work my friend :D xxx

I believe that my poetry comes from within my soul, through emotions and experiences. Somewhat like life stories.
I have written many that I keep close to my heart,I released one to my local church a few years back. It was uplifting the response. Around 60 people asked me for a copy. I hope that one day I will gain the ability to write and strike peoples hearts so to make them feel as special as they made me feel that day.

Mark
I've found about this http://www.lithasa.com/ website in an article saying that they are introducing new publishing format. I was excited and did see the website. The design is so good. I quickly fell in love with the website. They kept it very simple and
perfect in what they are showing.

And right now they don't have too many to show up. But for the new writers, it is good for them. I'll recommend Lithasa. Simply good.
