This page shows someone the basic requirements of a solid essay for school. After reading the article a person will have the basic concepts for writing a strong paper that should bring home a good grade.

Basic Construction

An essay consists of a Introduction, a Body and a Conclusion.

Your Introduction will be a complete paragraph. Start with a summary of the question or topic your essay is supposed to be about. Next go into the points you want to make in your paper (sometimes these are listed in the question the teacher gave you), mention each of them in a list type format in a sentence or two. Now follow up with a sentence that summarizes the point you are making with the paper, your grand idea.

Next you will write one paragraph for each of the points you listed in your Introduction paragraph, these are called the Body of your essay. Be sure to write each of these paragraphs in the same order you listed them in the Introduction. Also if possible include a quote or reference (be sure to cite your source) in each Body paragraph.

Finally you will write your Conclusion. This will be another full paragraph and will restate the topic or idea of the paper. Then mention each of the specific points you talked about in the Body paragraphs. Finally end with a single sentence that sums up everything you just wrote about.

Rules for good essays

Paragraph Rule
No two paragraphs can start with the same word.

Sentence Rule
No two sentences within a single paragraph can start with the same word.

Thank you ashucharu. These tips are what I use to get A's on my papers as I work on my BS in Social Sciences.

Good suggestions.
I thought the Paragraph Rule and Sentence Rule are peculiar?
Could you please elaborate their importance.

The purpose of these two rules is to prevent repetitive sentence formats. By not repeating starting words you are forced to rearrange some sentences which will make your paper read more professionally.
