I Love To Write With Pen And Ink

I seem to be at my most creative when I use an 'old-fashioned' way of writing.

A Sense Of Style

Despite the blurs and blotches, the propensity for smudges, the frequency of spillages, and the sheer inconvenience, I find the pen-and-ink experience of writing satisfying in ways that computer keyboards or ball-point pens can’t match.

My wrist and fingers seem to want to flow, to finish with a flourish, luxuriating in the lines and curves of letter-shapes. The nib, gently tickling the surface of the paper, is like a loving finger tracing the course of a vein beneath the skin.

Whether with pen and ink or a humble ball-point, I prefer to write my stories on paper first. Each story is then a physical entity, existing in human space, rather than a string of ones and zeroes stretched out in some remote data-base. If the high-tech digital copy is somehow lost, at least I have the low-tech hard copy with which to resurrect the story.

It seems also that I can write in long-hand at the same pace required for my writing-thinking mind to construct stories. Each sentence begins in my mind as a bare-bones vehicle for expression of an idea or action and, as I begin to write, the words and syntax seem to suggest themselves, and I proceed seemingly without pause.

It is while transcribing the pen and ink onto the keyboard that I edit, to repair a clumsy clause, and add or subtract a word or two to reinforce a rhythmic pattern, or tease out a metaphor to the point of breaking, but hopefully not beyond.

While I am writing, I feel a sense of self-fulfilment beyond that I find in almost any other activity. While I am writing, I feel like it is something I was meant, somehow, to do.
