This poem reflects the benefits of writing poetry to one who is struggling to maintain his or her recovery from compulsive gambling

The Benefits of Poetry to my Recovery

Though sometimes it seems pointless and futile
and at other times I wonder if it is worthwhile,
I try to do or think of something that makes me smile;
writing poetry or a short story!
With each day that I write poetry
my writing removes any bitter state of mind or misery
that my addiction to gambling puts me behind
because I am filled with a positive thought in my mind
that I should make an effort to do what i ought;
to show love in any way I can
to every woman or man;
and to be there for others who are in need
of money, hope, and love indeed
Not only does my recovery from addiction help me
but it helps those around me, you see
because they do not have to lend me any money
or see the ugly angry side of me
so I will make an effort for the rest of my life
to break free from Addiction's hold
that day by day gets increasingly bold
and to live a better life;
a life that is given in service to others;
to all of my sisters and brothers
