I don't know what I am

Okay, this was an exercise which I think was worth it, I know what It means but I'd love to hear other interpretations (just so you know, the real story is dull as hell, so I'd like a more interesting one!).

I don't know what I am

I’ve been in deep so long now,
don’t know which is up or down.
All I can see is a line of light,
and a key to release me.
I have a name but it’s not my own,
I’m losing my identity.

You’re looking at a blunt instrument,
Useful in a fashion,
When my time has come,
I’ll be boxed and left again.
There’s parts of me not on show,
Unseen mechanisms

This life is not my own,
I’m the hatchet man of my world
They just point me and unleash what’s kept inside.
But it always leaves a piece of myself behind.

Before this world of gloom I was so different
Now new names, and new ages, but I’m a relic.
There’s a newer model, sleeker and more powerful,

While I just slowly age, left empty inside
Nothing else to fill me, no new jobs to do,
Welcome to the age of “All-In-One”
