To get a date with the ice cream girl a soldier has to get past Daddy

Ice Cream Girl

You scoop ice cream
With little hands
In an Eis Cafe
Your Daddy owns
Somewhere in Europe.
I sit alone
At a small table
Reading for an hour
Every day
Watching you
Smiling at you
You smile back
I’m thinking the Zoo
Or Midsummer Night Ball
Or outdoor concert
Daddy watches me
He’s Italian
I smile at him
He is not impressed
I jump from airplanes
Climb mountains
Shoot at enemies
They shoot back
But Daddy
He Scares me
Courage
Courage
Just a little more
And I'll get up
And ask her
Or walk out the door
Like yesterday
And all the days
Before

I love the way you have built tension into the story by your use of short staccato lines, AmosTC. An excellent rendering of the age-old strained situation, and clever juxtaposition of two different kinds of courage.

Thank You for the entertainment!

I want you to stay and confront him. Nice one. This brings back the time my husband would give 'that' look to our daughter's potential boyfriends. His was done, one eyebrow up. LOL
Well written. Thank you for sharing.:)
