If I Followed You Home..

That little dog, tied to a street lamp, unwanted, discarded, or that bedraggled stray that you talk to, who wags a hesitant tail in search of food and a fuss...They are out there, the pets that become a hindrance, no more a cherished puppy...And all they want is someone to love them...Is it too much to ask...?

If I Followed You Home...Would You Keep Me...?

I've seen you walk this way before,
but was scared to get too near...
I kept my distance, just in case..
As a stray, you soon learn fear...
Yet the face I look at, seems to be..
just as lost as me, alone....
So would you keep me, Lady, please,
if I should follow you home?

I've been on the streets, left as a stray,
not wanted any more...
They said I cost too much to feed,
and drove me from their door...
I don't know what I did to them,
but I'm scared, and on my own...
So Lady, if I followed you..
Keep me? Give me a home?

Too many pets not wanted now,
discarded, thrown away...
as if toys, we are rejected..
no more the novelty of play...
Yet we too, form attachments..
we are loyal, skin and bone...
So please Lady, won't you notice me..
and give me back a home?

I see you turn, you smile at me...
my tail hesitantly waves...
Then you put out your hand to me,
and I know that I am saved..
Now settled in a basket,
Once more loved, and I am owned..
I am one of the luckier ones...
When your heart gave me a home..

Very good poem from the dog's perspective.

I should add to people who do find a stray, or see a stray, that it is good to call your local animal shelter before keeping it just in case an owner has reported it lost, stolen, or missing.

Thank you, Delicia, for your lovely comment. Good point, Mark, thank you for raising it, though I would hope that most people would automatically do this just out of consideration...It is a really valid point, I am so pleased that you added it my friend.

Oh this is heartbreaking but so true. So many stray dogs that need our love.Like Mark says, they have to go to the dog shelter first.

I fought tears with this one, Songbird, and then I just let them flow. Your blood flows with the milk of kindness.

Oh bless you Steve...It isn't easy seeing something from a dog's perspective, but I have tried to put it across as best I could...Thank you for posting on my page, my dear friend, and bless you for your lovely compliment...

I too had tears in my eyes as I read this beautiful poem. I can never understand why some people have pets in the first place, only to discard them later. To me a pet is a family member.

Walking through a rescue centre is absolutely heart wrenching Val, seeing all those animals needing a home..Most dogs just want to be loved and cared for..
