If you had $10,000 to spend, what would you buy?

Money has always been pretty tight for me and I am fairly practical when it comes to spending so I had to think about my answer when asked "If you had $10,000 to spend, what would you buy?”

The beginning ...

When I signed up with Wikinut, a fellow writer (Phyl Campbell) offered to write an introductory article about me and she asked me several questions to get started. One of those questions was “If you had $10,000 to spend, what would you buy?” and I had to think about that for a while. Money has always been pretty tight for me so I am fairly practical when it comes to spending.

First - Fix the house!

The first thing I would do is spend part of the money on repairs to our house – pay for a new roof, pay for fixing the well, remove the nasty carpet and put in some type of hardwood flooring, a fresh coat of paint, maybe extend the porch.

Next I would pay off some old debts and clean up my credit. I had to do a lot of repair on my credit after ending an abusive relationship in 2009. I was doing really well about rebuilding my credit until I had to have surgery in 2011. Since then I have had a lot of health issues and not been able to work a full-time job.

Next - Food!

The next part of my spending spree would be to spend a few hundred on stocking our freezer. Meat, veggies, and fruit … and maybe some canned/boxed goods for the pantry. I love to eat but pickings are getting pretty slim. I am not to the “starving artist” point yet but I am getting closer. We are struggling to pay our regular bills and buying groceries are toward the bottom of the list of where our money goes.

Next - Spoil the Cats!!!

The next part of my spending spree would be to buy … cat trees, toys, and treats! I love my fur-babies and I do not get to spoil them as often as I would like. Right now we just have a couple small cat trees for my babies to play on and I would love to buy them some of the large multi-landing cat trees. Or to purchase some shelving and perches to add to the walls to give the cats more area to play.

Last - Me!

If I had any money left at that point I would probably spend a little on myself. I have never been to a spa or had a manicure or pedicure. I only get my hair cut/styled when my mother treats me to it – usually for my birthday. I used to buy the boxed hair dye and color my hair myself, but I haven't been able to do that in a couple years. I am not really interested in getting a manicure, pedicure, or spa treatments but I would love to get my hair cut and colored by a professional.

No limits?

If money was unlimited – or not an issue – I would like to buy some land, build a house, and start a farm with lots of animals. The house we live in used to belong to my boyfriend's mom before she passed away. The house is falling down around us and we are having to spend what little extra money we might have to fix the little things – like keeping the toilets working and fixing broken pipes. We are limited with what we can do with the land around the house because it belongs to the family. We do have some animals – 3 dogs, 10 cats, and 3 horses, and I am building a small chicken coop – but we do not have enough room for cows, pigs, and goats – which I would love to have.

And my family...

I would also have a new house built for my parents. The house they have was built in 1913. They have added on a few rooms and been able to maintain the house fairly well but their health is not as good as it used to be. My father is diabetic and lost part of his foot not long ago. My mother also has a lot of health issues. It would be nice for them to have a house that is built for someone with mobility issues – and a house that requires less upkeep/repairs for my mother to have to do.

I am a poet and author. I tend to write a lot of poetry and articles dealing with emotional issues. Every once in a while I will throw in a goof-off article just to lighten the mood.

Every article I read, I learn more about you. A great call to action at the end of this piece would have been to ask others what they would spend $10,000 on. So I'm going to pretend you said that, and I have a list. (I'll keep it short.)

Dear Hubby and I have promised our son a trip to Orlando many times in his 11 years, but things have always come up. $3,000 would be one of the biggest splurges in my lifetime, but I think it would be worth it. (Universal Studios and Hogwarts, not Disney)
The remaining $7000 would pay off all the debts we incurred this summer with my FIL's funeral, my laptop purchase, and some medical bills.
See? As promised. Short and sweet list.
It is still my plan to take my husband and son to Hogwarts over the winter holiday. That is why I am looking for a job. If I can make $1000 bucks each month in addition to what my husband beings home, I won't have to cut our budget anywhere else.

When I wrote my article (old school - pen and paper) I had included the question to the readers as to what they would buy with the money - but somewhere in the typing and posting process I must have missed it.

I would give the money to my wife. She has more sense with money than I. Her happiness is worth more to me than any amount of money.
