In Genesis 16:1-4 we learn that Sarai, Abram’s wife had an Egyptian handmaid whose name was Hagar and since she was unable to have children, she urged her husband to take Hagar as his wife that he may have children by her. We are told that Abram agreed and soon the maid conceived.

Birth Of Ishmael.

As might be expected there was soon a dispute between the two women and Sarai was sorry that she suggested the arrangement in the first place When Sarai told her husband that Hagar now despised her he replied “behold thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee” Genesis 16:6 There is little doubt but that Sarai was jealous as any woman would be who had tried for years yet failed to give her husband a child. We can almost see and hear her as she seethes in anger and treats Hagar harshly, so harshly in fact that the maid fears for her life and flees from the house.
It is not the end of the story for Hagar however for soon the angel of the Lord finds her as she sits by a fountain of water in the outback. The angel asks where she is going and why but after she has told all, the angel insists that she return to her mistress and do as she asks. The divine messenger continues “thou shalt bear a son, and shall call his name Ishmael; because the Lord has heard thy affliction and he will be a wild man; his hand shall be against every man, and every man’s hand against him” Genesis 16: 11-12. Hagar returned and in due time gave birth to a son and named him as the angel had spoken.

Abram's Name Is Changed To Abraham.

We hear nothing further about the two women but it seems that Hagar and Ishmael remained with Sarai for they are still there thirteen years later when once again God speaks to Abram who is now ninety-nine years old. He is again reminded of the promise that God will make of him many great nations. He also tells Abram that because of this he will no longer be called Abram but Abraham Sarai too must change her name to Sarah - but there is yet more news Sarah will have a son!
This is now more than Abram can swallow, even if he thinks it is coming from God and I quote: Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said in his heart, shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old and shall Sarah that is ninety years old bear? Genesis 17: 17 (It might be noted here that this is the first time that age is mentioned as a reason for not having children, at least in the case of men. Abraham`s forefathers had begat children when they were hundreds of years old.!)
Along with the name change God also tells Abraham to start a practice that Jews and Muslims continue even today –Circumcision! He that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. Genesis 17:12. Immediately on the same day Abraham, his son Ishmael and all males in the family were circumcised as God had commanded him.

God Blesses Ishmael

Because he didn't think it possible that Sarah would have a child Abraham begs God to bless Ishmael and make his name great. God replies and once again I quote ``Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac; and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him and as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold I have blessed him and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly twelve princes shall he beget and I will make him a great nation``. Genesis 17:19-20. Even unto today Palestinians consider themselves descendants of Abraham and Ishmael! –and so we might say that the problems between the Jews and the Palestinians today began as an argument between two women!

" he will be a wild man"

It seems then that God can choose our personality for us like this even before we are born.

Good research here Kingwell.

Thank you spirited and an interesting comment. If we are actually a part of God, perhaps we have already chosen - but where does the free will come in?

Easy to create problems but so tough to resolve them! Maybe, we need higher intervention on the basics! So pleased that you are sharing pages from the past that are little known Kingwell - siva
