I talk about the reason for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot is afraid to remain in the city of Zoar and flees to the mountains where he lives in a cave with his two daughters.

The Real Reason For The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

In The Beginning God Part 9
In Part 8 we witnessed the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. You may have noticed that it is Sodom that is highlighted and Gomorrah is rarely mentioned. It would seem that this is because Lot, Abraham’s nephew, lived in Sodom and God spares Lot’s life because of Abraham. In fact God is willing to save all of Lot’s family but most of them refuse to listen, even his wife could not deny herself one last look at the city they were leaving, and as they had been warned that one peek brought about her demise.
The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are often associated with homosexuality and many believe that is the reason for their fiery end, some even use the story to denounce homosexual or gay love, however there is nothing in this story that invokes love – homosexual or otherwise. The two cities were renowned throughout the ancient world for lasciviousness debauchery, lewdness and depravity. While it is clear from the story that the crowd lusted after the two men and even refused Lot’s two virgin daughters in exchange – it is clearly lust and not love that is being talked about here.
The crowd were in the mood to degrade, humiliate, mortify and shame the two men, and to their way of thinking it would be much more fun than deflowering a woman who would probably show little if any resistance. This kind of behaviour is still common in parts of the world today and rape - whether it is a man or a woman who is the victim can never be associated with love. Sodom and Gomorrah were not destroyed because the people practiced homosexuality but because the population had sunk so far into brutishness and barbarianism.

Lot And His Daughters

Having seen the violent end of the city he had just left Lot was now afraid to remain in Zoar and with his two daughters fled to the mountains where he dwelt in a cave. What happens next is something that it is unlikely you will ever hear talked about in a church.
Lot’s two daughters become very despondent and feel certain that they will never find a husband and have children. The eldest daughter then comes up with a plan. She tells her sister and I quote “come, let us make our father drink wine and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father and they made their father drink wine that night and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down nor when she arose. And it came to past on the morrow, that the first born said unto the younger, behold, I lay yester night with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose and lay with him and he perceived not, when she lay down nor when she arose. Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. And the firstborn bare a son and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day”. Genesis 19: 32-38.
This is the last we hear of Lot although he is mentioned again in the New Testament. There is no record of his death or whether or not he returned to Zoar or continued to live in the mountains. Christians, Jews and Muslims consider Lot a righteous man and later in the Bible we are told that Jesus is a descendent of Lot through David's great-grandmother Ruth who is descended from Moab Lot's son by his eldest daughter!

I fail to see how a man drunk or not could not know he was having sex.

Also children born of such a reunion are often left with some kind of deficiency

I was thinking the same thing Carol but that's the way it is recorded. The churches don't like talking about this and hope that most people either won't read it or will just think about the true meaning. Blessings.

"unlikely you will ever hear talked about in a church. "

There is a lot more in the old Testament like this too.

You are giving a warts and all account here Kingwell, well done!!

Thanks Spirited. Did you notice early how Lot was quite willing to give his daughters to the mob. Women sure didn't seem very important back then. Blessings.

There are inconvenient truths in all beliefs - it is better that we do not sweep them under the carpet. We should move towards inclusiveness. This also shows man's depravity and the twist given to beliefs as God cannot stoop that low.

Frankly Kingwell, I have seen the snobbishness and hypocrisy in many supposed ardent believers who prefer to ascend to heaven alone. They little realize what they took for granted when alive here! siva

Thank you Siva and I think there are such people everywhere. I am reminded of the lady who said that she wanted to go to heaven but not if certain of her family members were there lol! Blessings.

'Sodom and Gomorrah were not destroyed because the people practiced homosexuality but because the population had sunk so far into brutishness and barbarianism.'

That is a bold statement. Yet ~ I believe it is true.~ and the confirmation can be found in Ezekiel.

Thanks again for this series! Blessings.

Here it is ~ Kingwell. It is Ezekiel 16:49-50

Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door. She was proud and committed detestable sins, so I wiped her out, as you have seen.
Ezekiel 16:49-50 NLT

Blessings!
