Interconnectedness is the Magic Key

When we put inter-connectedness above petty differences and leave no stone upturned to find common ground to coexist, the road and era to peace and prosperity will dawn before our eyes. There are many wise among us and let us free ourselves from using weapons and coercion as the be-all end-all to fix our issues.

Clear the Smokescreen

However much we try we are still stuck in a vicious cycle. If we give it a thought, it becomes clear it is due to our own making. Nature works in perfect harmony with occasional creative destruction for rejuvenation. Extraneous objects from outer space that have the power to destroy all life are smashed to smithereens when they enter earth’s atmosphere. We are the chosen one, fully protected – king and queen of all we survey! We are given an exalted position for a purpose and that looks to me to reach out to far and wide and coexist not only with those here. Those who are far away are also kept on a leash till we are capable of meeting them face to face. It looks like they are sending some robots to test us before making their grand appearance – they should be better looking than their creations that are flying around at high speed – though some assert we are hallucinating! Truth is always out there for us to stretch a bit than expect it to fall on our laps all the time. First things first – how can we reach out when we are infighting, then we will only spread ill will all over, pollute others too!

Destruction not the Way

It is easy to slip into a destructive mode – what are weapons for anyway but to be tested on guinea pigs and then fine-tuned to face the mightier! The more and more we resort to weapons than allowing genuine negotiations taking the lead to understanding others point of view the less will be our cherished inter-connectedness. Some are taken to be incorrigible – agreed, some fanatics are, but not the 99% everywhere. That is a fact known to those who have seen the essence of human behavior. Everyone yearns for understanding and acceptance but willing to adapt when needed. But our actions are pushing them against a harsh wall sowing seeds of injustice and revenge. Might is always resisted while reason and justice should lead to lasting peace.

Wisdom to Coexist

I have not been able to stay away from this topic for a while. I wanted to, but was inspired by the words of Jeffery Sachs, the highly respected commentator and Director, Earth Institute of Columbia University. I quote from his article of couple of days back:

“Tonight President Obama will address the American public and explain his decision to expand the ongoing Middle East war with more US bombings in Iraq and Syria. The decision to expand the US military campaign comes amidst high public emotions stirred by two gruesome beheadings. Yet Obama is leading us into a prolonged trap; the fight against ISIS (the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, also known as ISIL) is a fight that the region itself should lead.

It is also a fight that should be waged more through politics and economic development than bombs. The United Nations can and should provide the framework for an effective response, not the US. Yet again, as with George W. Bush, Obama will needlessly set the US up as the leader of a crusade against Islam.

We should understand from the start (as painful as it is true) that the US had a major hand in creating the new ISIS monster. The US funded the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan in the 1980s, which then morphed into al-Qaeda. Then the US destabilized Iraq from 1990 onward and Syria from the mid-2000s, in effect giving al-Qaeda and its affiliates a new stronghold. (As Assad moved closer to Iran, the US and Saudi Arabia took up the effort to topple him) ISIS broke away from al-Qaeda, and then captured the weaponry that the US had supplied to the Iraqi army. Now, President Obama is getting us still deeper into this never-ending battle with monsters stoked by our own ill-advised policies.”

I have been highlighting my views on the same lines all along as it appeared to me as accepting the realities of the present world and a way out of repeating our mistakes that are bound to fail time and time again.

Eschew Ego, the first step

We have many a choice in the way we choose to live. We get carried away by ego and self-righteousness that we are infallible. But if the same trait is all pervasive we are in trouble like now! Nobody is perfect or right – it is in finding the common ground that we can coexist. I have so much to learn and many posts here touch a cord and empathy but if I choose to highlight only the differences, not willing to budge an inch from what I think is right, then mayhem results. It should not be my way or the high way as many poor countries have only village roads still! Sachs has crystallized wisdom that America will benefit to heed. The vast majority have similar approach to life and want to live in peace, to be left alone.

Inter-Connect

There is so much of common ground that we can seek refuge in in times when emotions run amok. Let us use the technology and media to cut across all artificial barriers that few erect between us. The fanatics will always remain a minority and they react the only way they know under cover of darkness they spread. It is for our leaders not to fall into their trap. Wise words like from Sachs should be heeded as people like him are more in touch with the world than many leaders living in ivory towers. Mandela showed the way – the system was faulty, dismantle it, and don’t blame the cogs in its wheel. Even in wars not one innocent should pay the ultimate price with life and the innocents are the 99% everywhere. Leaders, please read the writing on the wall. You have the power to limit negative energy and karma from spreading no-holds barred through tit for tat, eye for eye, back and forth till all perish leaving our planet in shambles and writing our own sad epitaph. And to think we are misusing the name of Creator in the whole scheme of things!

True, we are being led (forced) to destroy ourselves by power-hungry "leaders" that will never recognize the true way or walk the right path. The world seems to be getting more evil with every passing hour, and the most we can do is be ready and pray.

Thank you Lavenderblu - do unto others as you would have them do unto you - is never far off the mark. Those like Jeffrey Sachs have wisdom acquired from their interactions at different levels. Bombings will only prove a tenuous, temporary, response and more of innocents will suffer. At the end of the day, more and more sophisticated weapons will land up in the "wrong hands" perpetrating a vicious cycle - siva

As John Williams pointed out, 9/11 attacks came about because the terrorists believed they were fighting back against US involvement and interference.
When Americans go into foreign countries, they should accept that they are targets. I'm not saying it is right, but it is reality. I hear Americans telling our leaders "enough is enough." But our leaders fear looking weak and do not listen to what we want.

Thanks Phyl for your input. I cannot understand why bypass the UN at all. Other super powers will leave America to their devices and even help others to spite them in the process to weaken it. One cannot distrust others as world peace is at stake and the vast majority suffer due to actions more led by emotions. No point in expecting the rest to bail us out when we ignore them in the first place. The ISIS is a threat to the whole world including the vast majority of peace loving followers of Islam. Let the actions not be turned into a crusade - siva

The gun lobby needs to spend their money somewhere, Obama keeps everyone happy by sending troops or withdrawing them according to the situation.
If we can say NO to guns then there is a chance for peace, I think. Siva, another few days of battle and there may not be anything to battle for!

Snerfu, my take was in the context of Mandela inviting his jailer to his Presidential swearing in ceremony. He had the wisdom to heal the wounds - the white jailer was just a part of a brutal system. I recall my tête–à–tête with my British friend thirty years ago in Indonesia when apartheid was at its height - how do you justify the system? He frowned and then told me - it is tough to talk on this subject especially when it involves a white man and an Indian! siva

Thanks Snerfu for your support. Disarmament is the first step to lasting peace. But the arms lobby will have none of it with their hands in the cookie jar all the time. The big powers should take the lead. It is indeed sad neighbors around China are trying to match their might and that means the common citizens have to foot the bill as usual. Every battle will sow seeds of more revenge, tit for tat, and more sophisticated weapons will find their way to all and sundry. To fight for peace is easy with the right mindset - give and take. It is our choice whether we choose to live in peace or war and sadly wars are imposed on the vast majority! siva

Otherwise, the terrorists will hold the rest to ransom and then, can we blame them when WMD is served on a plate but after having extracted the pound of flesh? If not today, tomorrow we will have to take the path of reason for coexistence and peace. Thanks for your support, Snerfu - siva

I felt so vindicated when Jeffrey Sachs reflected my thoughts and stand to a tee in his post. No super power should abrogate to itself the right to decide for others as it will open a Pandora's box with others too taking these as precedence. And then why supply sophisticated weapons at all as will boomerang on all. Now many countries are taking to arms exports as it is very profitable - siva

Dear Siva ...This is such a heady topic , and it would be arrogant on my part to say I know the answer or solution , but I do know One who does , and we read so many times in the Bible , that where people turned away from God's ways and commands , He allowed their enemies to come against them and many perished as a result ....but , as soon as they turned back to God in repentance , He turned against their enemies , and gave His people the victory and peace and rest from strife .
Jesus also said .. Love your enemies , pray for those who persecute you , that they may be sons of your Father in heaven...Matt 5 v 44
God is able to turn the hearts of our enemies away from destruction , and to Himself , if we pray fro them .
Violence will always beget violence, unless love and forgiveness intervene .
I pray we are not too late ..
God bless you my friend .
With love and peace

Thank you dear Stella for your steadfast and resolute stand on turning to Jesus, but the issue is this has overtones of crusade and such emotionally charged feelings make others go bonkers. Some take a view that these are battles between Gods fought by humans!

We have a clear set-up, the U.N, which the mighty America has been ignoring. If we get Russia and China involved, that will sent a telling message to the recalcitrant. In fact, both Russia and China are also smarting from the rise of ISIS and I will include India too as they should also be up there with the biggies - largest democracy surviving and thriving amidst chaos that is part and parcel of their life.

Jeffrey Sachs hit the nail bang on the head and his "endorsement" to my stand has given me a spring in my step!

My humble view is God will take a stand - I have given humans common sense - let them find their way out! siva

Wise words as usual Siva. Thanks for sharing.

Unfortunately ~ to a greater or lesser degree ~ we see the same type thing happening in families, business organizations, as well as city and state governments. As you so aptly stated, 'there is so much of common ground that we can seek refuge in in times when emotions run amok.' But because there is no genuine peace in the heart, the ego gets in the way. Then both discipline and self control get thrown aside. As you said "Everyone yearns for understanding and acceptance" but regrettably too few are willing to adapt when needed.

If I have even a tiny bit of understanding of the overall truth of Our Creator's Wonderful Book of Teaching on Life and Love, lasting peace will not be achieved until the Prince of Peace ~ the Humbled and Exalted Christ ~ returns to earth.

However ~ while we wait for His return ~ it seems to me ~ as you indicated ~ instead of going to war over every disagreement, we should utilize modern technology ~ to the extent practical ~ in a way that would lead to negotiated settlements.

Richest Blessings to you.

Thank you Helen. I am grateful for your input and welcome them. We come with an inner knowing though we face a tough (evil?) world due to our own making. The big powers do not trust each other with the result few take advantage to impose their writ to blackmail the majority to follow their selfish agenda. Our Creator sets an example through nature - unbelievable diversity every moment and rejuvenation to enthrall us. He has not created any barriers between us - have fun is His message and become co-creators. But some are out to subjugate others to suit their selfishness and ego.

When everything is given on a silver plate with His spark of creation within us to guide us along the right path I feel it will be too much to expect Him to come to our rescue. We have been given more than enough chances like in individual lives when we fall, we pick ourselves up. We have to decide our own destiny - coexist or perish. That moment will soon dawn on us when more and more powerful weapons fall into "wrong hands". Then we will wake up, hopefully not too late! siva

Yes Nancy, thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I share from my life experiences and have seen a variety of people with different beliefs, but the underlying nature stands out - they are human whatever their beliefs or looks. We are from the same source as any two from the opposite sex can have an offspring and they do not come with a belief except with an inner knowing and an outer cover to survive the elements here.

The way forward is to bridge the trust deficit we have created by our selfish actions and building bridges of understanding. That comes easy for the 99% but not for the selfish 1% - siva

China tells their people - see the chaos in the functioning of democracy and we cannot afford such free for all. They want to catch up and overhaul America before thinking of dismantling their system. The system should benefit the vast majority as Deng Xiaoping said - it does not matter whether a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice! Dear Siva, if only we can realise that all men are equal and we can celebrate our differences can there be real interconnectedness and harmony. On a deeper level, we are already connected and related not just to those physically close to us, but to every living being. If we can realize this, feelings of frustration, greed, ego, self-interest etc which cause so much suffering begin to vanish, as we realise that we are part of a dynamic, mutually interconnected whole.

Thanks dear Subra for highlighting the sublime truth. We reap what we sow and that has been so eloquently emphasized by Jeffrey Sachs as quoted by me above. We do not have iron curtain, apartheid and the old Middle Kingdom anymore to divide us as we are fully integrated with the mainstream world. Yes, greed, ego and self-interest prove a deadly cocktail against peace and harmony. Few accumulate more than they will ever need - many houses, but can they dwell in all? There is everything to meet our needs but not the greed as Gandhi said.
