It is so nice to know another Arkansas Wikinut. A few others have come and gone. They did not receive the same warm welcome I did, so I am hoping to do better by Manda Fowler, AKA, Web I Weave.

Previous Experience

One thing that makes Web I Weave different from previous writers I have invited to Wikinut is that she has done the online writing – and – publishing - scene before. She maintains two Facebook Fan Pages and wrote for the online site HubPages – 28 hubs written over a year ago still earn her $50 every six months. Compare that to my own 100 plus articles on this site, and she’s definitely got me beat in the earnings department. (Granted, she’s been at it a few years longer than I; the comparison may not be fair.) At one point, Web I Weave had her own website as well, but due to faulty equipment and a digital crash, she is working to rebuild the old site to former glory and beyond. Web I Weave understands that these things should not be rushed, but carefully managed.

Works With Her Hands

Speaking of rebuilding, Web I Weave knows how to work with her hands – I would say this is the mark of a true Arkansan, but I’m pretty sure she’s better than me and I don’t want to forfeit my title. I’ve added height to a short table and found better ways to use cardboard, rods and hooks, and hack kitchen work down to size. Web I Weave has built an entire structure from concept to completion.

Appealing to online sources like Freecycle and Craigslist, Web I Weave was able to secure building materials to create a chicken coop. As my family was moving out of our house and shop, we had a lot of extra wood pieces and parts from various projects that we had no room for in the new house. I saw one of Web I Weave’s postings and responded. Then to realize Manda was another writer as well – it made me happy. Some writers resent the competition, but I welcome others I can learn from.

A Storm, Crowdfunding, and Rebuilding

When I saw the completed coop, I was pleasantly shocked! And while shocking things happen every day, few things quite compare with the bizarre summer storm we had in late July.

At my house, it was just very strong winds and rain. Two streets over, a trampoline was twisted into a pretzel. Most damage was from minor, from falling limbs. Manda's loss was much greater.

The storm destroyed the coop she had built, so Web I Weave went crowdfunding to recoup her losses. I’m a little embarrassed to say not everyone was kind. Some people went out of their way to troll her project, calling her a “taker” and suggesting she get a real job. Another group contacted her to help, but their version of helping was taking what they wanted and leaving the rest – much different from the help they had originally offered. Still, Web I Weave is tenacious, used to disappointment, and wears a thick skin. She isn’t about to let some setbacks permanently derail her progress.

Education

Web I Weave is also exerting forward momentum in the field of higher education, having earned a Bachelor’s degree from University of Phoenix in business management and now pursuing a Master’s from Capella University in counseling. Since some employers in Arkansas do not recognize a degree from a for-profit college as having the same weight as traditional brick and mortar school, such as the land grant college of the University of Arkansas, Web I Weave has faced some difficult challenges (though to say that U of A is not for profit is laughable – my tuition and books may have been covered, but I am the only one of eight U of A alumni in my family who has managed that; living off campus, staying home, and commuting were also factors in the feat). Her experiences will prove educational for those weighing the pros and cons of different types of post-secondary education.

Miscellany

Web I Weave is a cancer survivor, a cat lover, a person who has struggled with weight and body issues, a dreamer, and a doer. I know that Wikinuts and guests will be entertained and informed by her articles. Please make her feel welcome by following her, checking out her posts, and offering comments whenever you can. Welcome, Manda – Web I Weave!

Image credits: I took the storm video and posted it to YouTube. I made the Wordle with Wordle.com and I took the picture of the 2x4s. Manda took the picture of her coop. The Capella badge is property of Capella, used when I was talking about someone's university experience there. The cat on the computer is MorgueFile -- but still very cute.

Well, Bill and Hilary have been in DC and NY for quite a while now. I prefer to remember Maya Angelou, and in my area, Sam Walton (WalMart founder) and John Tyson (Tyson chicken) are the famous names. A lot of wealth and talent come from humble origins in Arkansas. The good ones do not neglect the rest. And that's where I'll leave THAT! ! Thanks, Siva!

Thanks so much! I think she's pretty neat, and if that makes her similar to me in your eyes, then that's really cool -- I thank you, truly. ;)

I know the trouble! I'd been having an awful time! And honestly, I didn't know if you might view commenting on an article about yourself as immodest. But I am glad you stopped by, and hope things are going well for you.
