Hi everybody, my name is Brian, I am 30 years old and I come from the Highlands of Scotland. There follows a short account of where I come from and what I like to do and write about. Enjoy!

Childhood

I was born in the small town of Dingwall, which is about 200 miles north of Edinburgh. I grew up on a croft (or small farm) on The Black Isle, or Eilean Dubh in gaelic, where I lived till I was 13 years old. It was great growing up in the country because as well as learning the traditional crafting methods which are really dying out now; we had the freedom to play outdoors all day. We could run around for miles in complete safety and never meet another soul. Kids today don’t know what they are missing when they sit in front of their computers and games consoles for hours at a time. Sure they are having fun, but ultimately they are growing fatter and lazier by the generation. It’s not their fault though, today’s society is such that parents are too afraid to let kids go out and enjoy themselves because of all the dangerous and nasty people in the world and would rather know where they were all the time. I totally understand though, it is a sad state of affairs and I have no idea how or even if this can ever be changed. I guess we were just lucky, but I know for sure that when I have kids, they will definitely be raised in the country and not in towns or cities.

School and University

I did fairly well in school and made a lot of great friends who I am still very close with today. Again I think myself very fortunate here because good friends are the next most important thing in life to family in my opinion. I went to university in Edinburgh to study Accounting and Finance, but realised after the first year that I wasn’t really enjoying it and so I gave that up and went to work instead. I believe that if you are not enjoying something then you are never going to put your full effort into it so it’s best to find something that you do enjoy.

First career

For me it was working in food retail. I got a job at a supermarket and started from the bottom, stacking shelves but soon started to work my way up and in 4 years I was assistant manager. This is where I lost my love for the job though as this is when the big companies really start to take advantage of their staff. I regularly found myself working 90-100 hours a week, sometimes finishing at midnight only to be back in for 5am to start again. The worst part of that was that I was paid a flat rate for 39 hours a week and nothing more. It didn’t take long for the gruelling schedule to make me quite ill, so again I walked away and looked for something else to do.

Other jobs

For the next 6 years I had several jobs from selling kitchens to working in a café with some office jobs in between. Ultimately these were all just stop-gap jobs while I waited for inspiration on what to do next. The good thing about these 6 years where I wasn’t chasing a career was that I had time to indulge my real passions of hill walking, camping and photography. see my favourite place Also I met my fiancé 2 years ago and we now live together and are getting married this year. Some of you may know her as fellow Wikinut Greenfaol! a brief introduction to me If you haven’t read any of her work yet then please do because she is the real writer and has been doing it for years whereas I have never written anything until a few weeks ago! At the end of 2009 I decided that I’d had enough of city life and wanted to return to the highlands so I packed up all my stuff and came home.

Coming Home

I now work as a gardener on a large private estate on the beautiful West Coast just a few miles from the Isle of Skye. It’s a huge leap from what I’ve done before but it allows me to work outside in my favourite part of the world and I really love the job. It’s different every single day and there’s a lot more to it than looking after flowers. This job involves a bit of everything including: building, plumbing, drainage, maintenance, mechanics, driving, design and photography. It really is the ideal job!

Signing off

Well I think that’s about it for now; we’ve already established from my previous articles that I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to wrestling; so you can expect me to write more on that subject as well as writing about things like gardening, outdoor pursuits and photography.

Please go over to Flickr some time and look at some of my photography work at www.flickr.com/travels_and_tribulations

Thanks for taking time to read about me.

Thank you, it's very kind of you to say so. I can't believe I got a star, I didn't think it was good enough so it was a very nice surprise.

As for the profile pic, thanks again. It's long exposure photography and a torch, it's a lot of fun, Maybe i'll write about it on here. There's more examples on my Flickr page.

That was really wrong of u to think that nobody would be interested in reading about u! here at wikinut we all are interested in whatever the writers write and especially when it comes to something about their life and inspirations!
so ur wrong brian for that!
secondly I just got done with faol's article and I was thinking if u were the 'brian' green faol has in her life and there u are, i read ur intro and got to know so!

I read this post with keen enthusiasm. I live in a busy city and agree life is very mundane and soulless but, sad to say, that is the way lifestyle is coming to - away from nature. I do hope you are doing great Brian - siva
