Is There a Success Parameter in Life?

We have individual talents. We should not be restricted by success parameters highlighted by the media so that we are not short-changed in life.

Gliding through Life

Life is replete with turns, ups and downs that make it exciting. We pause to ponder how our journey has been and try to understand where we are headed for. We look around to see how others are faring and evaluate our journey vis-à-vis them. We pay a price for our choices and actions like all others do. Hence there need not be heartburn as we are what we are; enjoy the fruits of our labor and also pay for our follies. We can make course corrections along the way but we have to try harder to make a turn away from the beaten path. I evaluate and find that others have chosen their paths to be where they are. No one is more successful than others even if some happen to be billionaires. It is their choice in life and we have to respect them like others who mind their own business paying little attention to material wealth. We have legal rights over material wealth but that dissipates the moment we are stuck off the “live” register of life. We leave behind memories and our closing moments should give us solace than leave with a heavy heart. True lightness of being is what is required and the departure expected any moment!

Different Paths

The beauty of life is we take many a path and have myriad of choices at hand. We have umpteen doors waiting to open; we enter some only to realize that they were not what we had intended for; we do have exit points but only few take the initiative. In fact, the choices are getting wider and the future is exciting as well as daunting; remaining positive matters a lot.

Our choices may not yield what we had hoped for but no point in drowning ourselves in misery. Every path has its own charm and we meet fellow travelers to give us wholesome company just like we have met at this beautiful site where we are a family. The doors open and close all the time and no one is held against their will. Modern life has given us freedom and human mind is such we adapt. We get used to our environment; just like North Koreans do not know what freedom is, but they might be more contented than few who enjoy unlimited freedom. So we are all blessed in the choices we have in life.

Life is not Business

One grouse I have is some treat life as a business. We have the majority who treat others with compassion as also few who are out to spoil the party. They exploit those vulnerable treating them as digits to make a profit out of them. Everyone is a potential target to be utilized to extract maximum advantage out of. They make us guarded as their words are written on water. They are always out for new targets as a matter of their lifestyle. Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? I don’t think so considering the many hapless victims who fall prey to the machinations of few out to make a kill. The latter cast a pall of gloom, to put it mildly.

Pursue our Passions

We are born with inherent talents and it is indeed a waste if we do not pursue them. Most get carried away by a herd mentality and realize too late that their lives have taken a path that is hardly rewarding. Our needs are limited and we do not have to spend all our waking hours to meet them. We should find time to slowly nurture our passions so that our lives become fulfilling. With modern technology it is easy to widen our circle of like-minded people across the whole world. Rather than getting limited by distances, such borders are past us, let us make use of technology to positive effect so that we are truly a global village and Wikinut is one of a kind.

Ready for the Next Lap, Wherever, If Ever

We acquire many skills and traverse rough terrains in our ride here. Will they be wasted and lead to nothing in the end? It looks illogical to think so. Maybe, we are destined for higher challenges or even return right here better prepared to complete unfinished business! But we may not have any inkling of the past rides like when we arrived here. We come with a blank hard disk but with some programming inside. So let us take our journey as endless; or if it proves otherwise, we have done our best doing justice to our ability and talents, not just eking out a living. We have acquired many skills that may prove useful. At least, we leave a legacy that should be a lesson for others yet to come. I hope to leave in peace without any regrets having done justice in the best way possible. Everyone is successful in their own way if they do what comes naturally to them finding meaning in the whole creative process. We play our part and no life is wasted if we do not restrict ourselves to the success parameters that the media highlights often.

Nice post. There is no parameter for success as per the Gita. It is measured with ones own standards and soul.

Thanks Madan. It is natural to feel like losers when we are in the midst of the rich. I have seen the wealthy trying their best to avoid the ordinary Joe. I strongly feel no one is a loser in life as we take different paths for our own good. It is sad when the media highlights wealth as the be all and end all in life. Being a finance person all my life I can state incontrovertibly that behind every fortune there is at least one crime! siva

Wonderful post Siva...quality of life is attainable within each of us as individuals.. if we have our health, piece of mind, unity, and appreciation of non material things in life, we are successful in our own right.
Thank you for this inspiring share my friend.

Thanks Mariah for your input. Health is wealth and added to that contentment and peace of mind. And as Mandela's life taught us, a life without spite and vengefulness. He has showed the way for a sublime future and let us follow what works. What a legacy! siva

Good morning, Siva; thank you once again, for pointing out that material possessions are not the end-all, be-all. Emphasizing that acquiring these at the expense of our fellow man will be evened out, if not now, then later refinforces a common belief. As Mariah states, having health, piece of mind, unity and contentment are things that money cannot buy is also valid for me. Sharing. ~Marilyn

Thank you Marilyn for your support. I have seen the pressure on men nowadays in Asia to keep up with women - to earn more than them! I feel that is a wrong benchmark and leads to operation successful but patient dead! I also see around me nine out ten working their guts out to keep the one rich! Every member in a family should complement each other like in society in general and, why not, among countries. We often take a wrong route but should ponder where we are headed for and have the wisdom to return to a path that beings peace of mind - siva

Contentment in all circumstances is a great key to success dear Siva . If we crave what others have , we will never have peace , but if we do our best to do our best , and be satisfied it is our best ...if you follow my gist
God bless you with peace and contentment this Christmas time my friend .

Thanks dear Stella. Thank God all are not greedy but the one greedy will spoil our environment. Most are contented in life and able to even squeeze blood out of stone to live and even smile. Mandela did that and kept smiling - maybe, after what he went through everything else in life is pure heaven! siva

Thanks for another wonderful, inspiring article ~ Siva

I agree that 'we are born with inherent talents and it is indeed a waste if we do not pursue them.'

Unfortunately ~ it does seem that too many individuals do get carried away by an instant gratification, 'what is trending now' mentality and do not realize until it's almost too late that because of their choices, they do not have the contentment they desire.

We see so many who lose their health chasing wealth. Then spend much ~ if not most ~ of their wealth endeavoring to regain their health.

Abundant blessings of peace and joy to you.

Thank you Helen for your support and encouragement. I have seen in Asia some taking a path to wealth creation and get obsessed with that goal over time to the extent nothing else matters in life. Yes, they get attention but sadly from the wrong people leading to their doom eventually. And they are unable to reconnect with their families when they need them having neglected them when they were chasing after wealth. Merry Christmas - siva

I recall having read a story in Hindi when I was a child. It was a translation from the works of a great Russian author(was it Chekhov? I am not sure!). The story went like this:

A farmer had to pay his debts, and somehow a challenge was thrown to him by his lenders that he would have to run an area from dawn to dusk, and whatever area he is able to run across till dusk would be his.
One condition was that he was to cover the distance back too.
This person was quite fit, and he is able to run a lot till afternoon, enough to be able to pay his debts.
However, he becomes greedy and runs for some more time. He gets tired and thirsty, and still runs more.
His condition worsens yet the greed made him run more. Now, he has to run back also. He realizes that he has less time till dusk. So, he runs faster. In the process, he gets so fatigued and his conditions worsens, the person finally dies.

We(and yours truly ) too at times act like this. However, being greedy always does not help and in fact can make us ill also.

Thanks Ptrikha for your comments and sharing the story too.

One should not cross the border where we lose our sense of proportion. I am in the finance field and know one person from nearly three decades ago who has become one of the richest in the world. He had a single minded focus to develop his business but he seems to have his life in balance. But I do see around me some walking around as if they have scaled very high mountain of achievement but their general attitude sucks. They cheat the vulnerable and kind-hearted but lose big time to fraudsters. Unfortunately the big financial institutions compromise with them. I remember one case where a top bank sued for forex losses one individual for a billion dollars and he stated he was misled. Finally they settled the issue by private arrangement without disclosing who bore the losses.. Obviously they were footed finally by the common citizen! siva

I like this line very much:

"We play our part and no life is wasted if we do not restrict ourselves to the success parameters that the media highlights often."

Yet aren't we stifled publically by parameters that judge our being successful or not, almost everytime?

That is the issue I have highlighted. We are led by heard instinct whereby we feel wealth is the be all and end all of success in life. Life has such variety and it is indeed sad if we become enslaved to only wealth and its accouterments. I have seen few business people whose personal dealings are also dictated by business interests. I keep my distance with them to maintain my sanity. I salute those whose lives bring betterment to the common person like scientists, physicians etc - siva

Dear Siva, while I agree that success should not be inhibited by set parameters and the way people perceive us, yet we have to be realistic in a society that is intertwined with how we integrate with society.Everything is interconnected these days and we are all so trapped in the system that we cannot isolate ourselves and tell the world that we have achieved success o our own. We all need to pursue our passions with dignity and integrity and if success evolves as a result, that is our success parameter. As no two persons are the same, similarly success is relative and depends on one's perspective in life. My view is that everyone of us is guided by our own individual success parameters which vary from person to person.

Congrats on another star,
dear Siva

Thanks dear Subra for your views. What I wanted to convey was that media highlights certain success parameters especially wealth. If everyone chases after wealth as the be all and end all, our world will be a horrible place full of greed and backstabbing. Every moment will be just for making money. In fact, I have seen nine work for one to attain wealth. I wanted to salute the nine for their contribution to the welfare of society - siva
