Is Wisdom a By-Product of Getting Older?

Is it a given that as you get older that you become wiser? In some instances I think that might be true.

Rite of Passage

You know you're getting old when you consider it a rite of passage to get the senior citizens' discount at your favorite restaurant. And don't let the waitress offend you by not deducting that 10% from the final bill. In reaching this state in life does one automatically gain wisdom as a by-product? I do believe this statement may very well be true for the following reasons.

You Don't Let Things Bother You As Much

As you grow older you tend not to sweat the small stuff any more or as often. Things that once seemed to get your gander up have fallen by the wayside of triviality.

You Don't Feel the Need To Be All Things To All People

When you were younger you craved the attention of your peers. The people that have been your friends through the years accept you for who you are. You're not trying to win a popularity contest.

You're Grateful for Family and Friends

Your appreciation for family and friends is heightened because you know that none of you will be around forever. You savor the moments that you spend together.

You're Not as Critical with those Younger than You and You Don't Complain as Much

You've come to realize that you were once young too and are a little more tolerant when they make bad decisions or choices.

You recognize that being and habitual complainer only leads to frustration. It's a weight that you choose not to bear.

You've Learned to Take Other Peoples' Thoughts in Consideration

You don't have to be intimidated by someone whose views are different from yours because you are confident in your belief system.

You Have Learned to Laugh at Yourself

Instead of being so serious with so much going on in your life, you have learned to balance the good and the bad with laughter.

You Have Learned to Show Restraint

While you are always entitled to express your opinion, you remind yourself that sometimes it's better just not to say anything if it causes unnecessary turmoil.

Celebrate and Share Your Wisdom

There is so much that an older person can impart to those who are younger. One displays wisdom when they share what they have learned along the journey of their life. So if you find yourself at this point in your life-live it up and celebrate by giving those pearls of wisdom away. It'll be priceless for the recipient.

I love your family pictures! I've crammed a lot of experience into my years -- I have more patience with some people, but don't have time for the you know what of others!
Great article!

I'm not sure about the "You don't complain as much" line - if that was so, there would be no "Grumpy Old Men" (and women), and there are plenty of those around!

Thanks John. There are a lot of those around that is for sure. But the complaing will only make them grumpier.

Good thoughts, Lee. I'm not sure if I'm gaining wisdom as I get older. Mostly, I'm just gaining weight! And getting gray. Ha ha. :)

As somebody famous once said, why can't life's problems hit us when we're 17 and know all the answers?

Thanks Joyce. My attitude is if you can't beat them join them. If we live long enough we'll all be old. It does have its advantages.
