Is there a Purpose to Life?

The adage - idle mind is the devil’s workshop - pin us down to a destructive lifestyle devoid of substance and meaning. It is more led by deceit, negativity of thinking and action. It is time for us to find a higher purpose to our lives to bind us as one and elevate our thinking and lifestyle.

Interdependency

When we observe other species we get an idea of the role of each species in the creative process. They lend their weight to the subtle ecosystem that supports life in various forms. Some are predators while some live as a food source to the former even as they enrich the creative process in other ways. All are dependent on other species and their own too. We may not ponder on the roles we play but the subtle balance of creation and self-renewal depend on everything in our planet and even from outside our own habitat. The whole universe is playing its part to keep the creative process humming along! Having been endowed with more of self-awareness, we can reflect on our role in the whole scheme of things. We should be able to raise our contribution by playing the role of co-creators. We should not just exist from one generation to another passing the baton and end up with more of selfish pursuits and increasing exploitation of natural resources to the detriment of other species and depriving our own yet to come. With increasing awareness with the passage of time, are we any wiser about the purpose of life or are we moving at a faster clip just filling our moments without pursuing a deeper meaning and substance to our lives?

Reversing our Unsustainable Path

It is clear we are unable to create something of real value to sustain and bond us together. We have no common goals to spur us into united endeavor. We have been at loggerheads and work at cross purposes nullifying the knowledge derived from history and past experiences. Scientific progress has also meant more destructive powers that few threaten others with. It looks plausible the Doomsday Clock is moving closer to midnight with no real heroes in sight to save us from Armageddon, total annihilation. That happens when our lives are led by deception, greed and avarice and the rich are worshiped never mind how they got their riches with the end justifying the means! We can reach anywhere on our planet overnight and savor the truth that the vast majority are just the same, yet as countries we have no compunction in treating others as targets for elimination. Out of sight is out of mind shows the way for the senseless hatred that is total anathema to the creative process.

Real Progress through Wisdom

We have knowledge at finger tips that should crystallize into wisdom and wholesome progress. Our leaders travel around the world but the endless promises and agreements are not even worth the paper they are signed on. No one believes another as ulterior motive is the norm! Self, politics and country interests act against those of humanity as a whole. Lots of victories end up as Pyrrhic in the end – an endless chain of mistrust and deceit. No one is believed, respected, regarded as trustworthy. Religion and beliefs are used as weapons by minority to threaten the majority with and bring them into submission! Daily news is mostly about intolerance and meddling in others’ lives and lifestyle. We seem to have lost our way as we have entered an entitlement zone taking much for granted. We should not depend on adversity to unite, knock common sense into us again.

Elevate our Lifestyle

Can we agree on a broad framework as to where our lives should lead to? Or at least, live and let live so that we can pursue our own goals without being at each other’s throats? The second option is sustainable till we are able to reach a common ground to reach a higher realm of existence. Many do follow this option but are stymied in their efforts as the daily agenda is set by few who are despotic in their pursuit of their sinister goals. The world will be so much a better place to live in if we are able to pursue the agenda of the majority to live in peace and coexistence. That will also provide the right platform to look ahead to reach out to faraway horizons based on living a fulfilling life. The need for such a step forward is clear when we look at the present state of affairs where we are pinned down by negativity of our mind leading to a lifestyle thrust upon the majority – putting out endless self-created fires. The purpose of life should be more than that, and above daily fight for existence and endless conflicts. A common goal to be pursued should arise from the lessons we have learned in history. Otherwise, we are just like other species, but creating havoc unlike them that contribute to the creative process. We are inborn with compassion and empathy and let those prevail over hatred and ill will – best is yet to be is the clarion call!

Scientific progress enabled new technologies to extend human longevity, reduce disease and mortality, and elevate our lives. It is the evil in people, not science, that threatens annihilation and makes for Armageddon.

Thanks Steve for your words of encouragement. Scientific and technological progress have also a price to pay as we can destroy more through them! We have to merge more with nature even while being alive rather than exploit it to our heart's content and not feel bad about it! True wisdom lies in how we play our part as co-creators and by evaluating dispassionately the consequences of our actions - siva

See Shiva, The truth of humanity is seen in the life is made and honestly, it is rhetorical and boring.
Here is a gist of it:
Birth, toilet training, school, finish school, body discovery somewhere in school, then higher school, few sidekicks and then find JOB wherein humans as a rule lead a mundane boring life as then they find a spouse and have kids and the same thing begins all over again.
Now if you take me, well yes I had the same thing too, but at age 4 realized I didn't fit in, by five and six went and joined a singing group and voiced my opinion to people, learnt the piano, got into sports and started my own business at the age of 12 and learnt the truth about life through it while friends ran I am female fuck me I stayed home and built up a music school, made an income and taught and trained people.
I had no inclination to men and marriage and just to make my family happy, I got myself a boyfriend and married him and made a home until he finally proved to be the ultimate son of a bitch who loved extra curricular 'activities' to being a responsible family man. Hated it.
So here is what I did, threw him out, revamped and became my own self, brought up my son with my principles and showing him respect his father for his tadpole contribution to make him and that is it. He learnt his father is useless and went on to learn how to take care of animals, people, work with others, and even tell off parents whose kids don't behave themselves.
I have no qualms being a single mum although I am still married and just for the sake of his life as he begins going mad the minute I walk out.
Well now he is in mental insanity and medically certified and here is the fact, I never caused its but his extra curricular activities supporter did him most harm.
I still don't know what happened in 2012 except that he went mad in Australia while I am in NZ.
Now I am what I co-create and so chose to stay married and told him to make his choice and decision too. He chose his whoring sister in-law and that was it, my child and myself walked out again leaving his family in their hell hole to extinguish their flames doused by the sister in-law.
I am not bothered, its personal in your eyes but to me, this is a life learning I am sharing to make humanity better, take it or leave it. Lack of empathy is what has made the world the place we see, heartless bunch of diplomats who now finally have no tongue to be diplomatic but speak what is termed as their reality as the tongue has no control and the heart of your identity speaks it all as it is created by you.
If you think you are good, look within your kids and family and see the truth of how they see you and you will know the fact that you are liked and respected by them.
I have no hassles in saying if I were with my child today, we would be reclusive people reading and building things and exploring possibilities of life to see what makes it better and build a business and niche for ourselves.
Well that is me but you know the Indian community, they never respect women who stand alone without a male unless they know how to fight. Well that is the typical Indian life and I don't dress and talk like you all either so there you have it, now you know why I was never accepted by the Hindu family of the husband. its because I am Christian.

I can well relate to where you are coming from, LA. In fact, life is never easy for anyone; it is how we make sense of it and play our part. It is an endless process of give and take; sometimes our body and temper make our decision and mind has to adjust to it. I look for guidance from my inner voice, soul, as it is finally what I am.

I too have had a rough ride at times but I make every effort to get back to normal path. I have zilch ego, let go easily, though I try to avoid those who are cantankerous as leopard cannot change its spots! Past is well past, learn the lessons and look ahead. I readily forgive; agreed, tough to forget the insults but are they not also part of our lives adding to the variety, testing our resolve?

Earlier times, women held the fort when mostly men worked outside home. Women have own strengths and exerted much influence on family matters; in fact, they hold the family together. Modern day women want to earn a living too but have a dual role looking after home. Indian men too rise to the occasion as earlier male chauvinistic attitudes have changed. In fact, many Indian men repay the debts of their forefathers to their lady folks!

When a bad turn visits me, I have a take that creation has chosen me to face the music, to test my mettle, an honor bestowed on me. I look from outside how I weather my storm and finally pat myself for a job well done – meaning, we all play our part. We are mere pawns in the game of life and as the Bard said “ All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.”

I wish you well – keep looking ahead past all the hurts that when revisited only hurt us. Life is always worth living but it materializes when we change our attitude with a positive turn in consciousness. For me, we play out our karma while creating them too. The good has always outnumbered the bad anytime and, hopefully, will prevail for eons to come! siva

I must say that I enjoyed this well thought out write. I agree that as humans we need to learn from our past mistakes, adapt, rise up from the chains of bondage that in our own way are inflicted by our disregard to the follies that have colored our paths with pain and hard lessons. History speaks echoes of the past, loudly and clearly but we have to be ready to listen to the wisdom. Nicely written!

Dear Siva, “The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.” This saying by Dostoyevsky speaks volumes for living a lifestyle that elevates us and helps us to elevate others. To empower, motivate and inspire people to living happier and more fulfilled lives should be our mission, if we believe that we are here for a definite purpose. Well done Siva

"Go and enjoy and also become a co-creator" is the inner mantra we hear. We also live in the world we want as we see reality differently!

"We should be able to raise our contribution by playing the role of co-creators"

"Otherwise, we are just like other species."

These two statements seem to be at loggerheads to me.

The fact to me is that we are just another species. We can't necessarily raise ourselves above anything.

Why don't we just be ourselves as the animals are, rather than trying always to be something we are not?

Our path is our path is our path. Why try to take ourselves off of it?

That's only my two sense worth though siva, I appreciate also your trying to get people to raise their awareness about how they are living on our path. I believe in a way that we are all on the same path together.

Thank you Spirited for your take. Other species lack awareness and continue as they were from time immemorial. We are endowed with higher consciousness to ponder about our life and role in the whole creative process. We also have the ability not only to create but also to destroy following the classic duality in the creative process.

We are increasingly following a lifestyle as if there is no tomorrow, then why not also elevate our goal to create as well? Other species play their role without much awareness but do not destroy like us. They use what they need, but we go overboard even to rape resources that have taken billions of years to develop to this stage. My plea was let us add value than follow a destructive path wantonly. I feel we are going against the creative process with nature obviously under strain to meet our needs which are now going overboard – siva

Thanks again siva. To me the body of the species is not as important as the soul within it taking the journey.

This means than an animal can have a very wise old soul within it too, if we believe in reincarnation. Sometimes our pet dog then is our best teacher.
